From what I was told, Rick is running it now with some help. Doug died a couple years ago, Mary is still kicking.

Realistically, how many hunts do you think you’ll make a season?

If its like most similar situations the plan is to take a couple of clients a year who are already either good friends or family members and then whoever came up with the idea plans to use it as their own private hunting spot. Thats the way 99.9% of this types of situations work. I sold 3 shares (keeping 1 share) in a boat in Stuart Florida for nearly 10 years and in 10 years I carried exactly 5 clients fishing...and I had fished with those 5 numerous times before I sold shares in that boat. Nearly every penny I spent on that boat in that time was destined to wind up in the hands of the IRS or the Georgia Department of Revenue. I, along with the other 3 owners, used that boat probably 150 days a year and it cost me, at least, about what my duck boat on a trailer in my shop cost a year.

If you think it through would you seriously consider doing business with a new client who offered to waste 6-8 hours at best of your time duck hunting? It may be a good way to improve relationships with existing customers but if I were being courted by company who wanted me to do business with them and they did not understand how busy I was I'm not sure I would be interested...unless the duck hunting was serioulsy good and then I would go for that at least. 18 holes of golf and lunch is one thing, a day in a duck blind is time consuming for busy small business owners.

That won't even get you a decent blind.

I would def do paid hunts way easier, less to worry about and it lets you spend more time with the customers and not having to worry about planning meals and everything else.

Good Duck lease are hard to come by. Chances are if land is on the market there is a reason.....

You might get one blind for that and it will be a crapshoot.

It's fun the first couple of years after that, not so much. It's a grind and from October through mid feb you are worn out.

Finding a spot now is brutal and expensive. Especially if you don't own it - there is always someone watching / lurking to out bid you in a heartbeat if you have birds. It's mercenary work now adays.

You could rent a property or a blind, but odds of having a solid blind are very low.

For what you'd spend I'd say consider the paid hunts. If you double/triple that budget you could lease something decent....if you can get in.

Definitely do the guide route. Maybe reach out to a few different outfits to see if they have corporate pricing. The good news about that is you can move with the birds. It may be worth dealing with an outfit who can do fishing and hunting trips so you could get the best bang for your buck depending on conditions.

We have 10 blinds in Johnson’s bayou and 8 in hackberry, the law of avgs always wins. People are moved around to hot blinds periodically.
MWP hunts and fishes through his company, he can vouch for the benefits of using an outfitter. I asked him if he was the boss, “nope those customers are the boss”.

as others have mentioned, I would book day hunts at various outfitters in S or SW Louisiana. Most offer lodging and meals as prices vary based on the facility. Grosse Savanne is the real deal as you will be treated like Kings and with a cost. Another option is Hackberry Rod & Gun . Research both facilities and decide what's best for you. Book several hunts for however many people you plan on taking ... 3-5 ? I wouldn't pass up the fishing opportunities as the cost will be a good bit less. KemoSabe can hook you up with fishing at Big Lake Fishing out of Venice would also be an awesome trip with customers.

FWIW - my friend who owns an oil field service company did something similar.
He booked 10 bow hunts during the peak rut at Tara Wildlife and invited his best customers and top salesmen.

Locking in hunts with a local guide service is what my former employer does for its customers. They had stayed with the same guide service/lodge forever, but that guy sold out a couple years ago, so they looked around and found another service that had a nice lodge and good hunting ground.

that's my point outfitter is the way to go... when an area loses birds - relocate.... plus the head aches of running it year round maintenance....It's why I've balked at doing it again.... twice.

As others have said, I would book trips with an outfitter. Way less hassle for you. Swla is swamped with guide services these days and they get all the best properties. Plus, there are a lot of people in the area that will knowingly rent you the worst gar hole for $10,000, knowing you aren’t gonna kill anything. Plus, if geese do get on your farm, they’ll put out cannons or shoot them out your field. Good luck.

Yep, they are the ones with the checkbook. I wouldn't have it any other way but using an outfitter. Screw getting a lease. That means you have to have all the other shite that goes with a lease (boats, wheelers, decoys, etc...) Going with an outfitter removes all that plus it takes all the headaches out of the entertainment end of it. Just need to find the right outfitters. Probably the reason our company loves using HR&G. Top notch guides (including you sir), property, and lodging experience.

I should get a free trip for that plug Kemo......lol.
