I couldn't possibly care less about the hill country. meh af
I was slightly hyped for it when I moved around here because everyone talked like it was nirvana.
That notion was shattered pretty quickly lol

I've been in Texas longer than I lived on Louisiana, so yes, I'm now a Texan

After 18 years in TX, I think of having LA roots and love my heritage, but I am grateful to be a Texan.

There's a rule over here: if you are here 25 years or longer, or, have been here 5+ years and have native-born Texan children, then you are exempt from filing for citizenship when Texas secedes. Anyone else that wants to stay will have to go through a background check and may/may not have to move out of state while the application for citizenship is being considered.

maybe the nuance is the difference between being a "native texan" and claiming "texan" status.

I consider myself a Texan. I have no ties to LA any longer as my parents have been in FL for years and I have no reason to go to LA other than passing through to FL. Also all of my kids were born in TX and I’ve been in TX almost as long as I was in LA.
Texas is my home and will be until I die.

An individual, native if born in the state, adopted if currently a resident, that thinks the state exists to protect it's right to live life in whatever manner they choose, who enjoys queso and onions on their beef enchiladas, is not bothered by four months of 100 degree heat and no rain, supports the cowboys and thinks soccer is a communist plot, owns a gun, shops at heb

Natural born 7th gen Texan here. Texas is a "State of Mind" and anyone welcome to naturalized!

You need to be born in Texas to be a native Texan. And you have to assimilate if you are an outsider to even be considered a Texan at all.
You can still be a Texan. The native borns like to use “native” as a qualifier simply to indicate they are more Texan than many Texans.
For me what made a difference is when I had a son born in Texas. As parents, we learned that Texas has a pledge of allegiance that kids recite in school. Goes like this:
And of course I had to master a smoked brisket. It wasn’t good enough to simply feel good about it, it had to earn the blessings of other Texans.
Internalizing the identity of a Texan also requires valuing your independence to the point of expecting your political leaders to not give you “free” stuff. You expect to pay for your environment and good schools via property tax. It’s the same pride that comes from not having a tax on your productivity - that nonsensical commie income tax shite.
We still value our Louisiana heritage - growing up poor in one of the illiteracy capitals of the US whose one redeeming quality is the food. So we take our food culture with us to share with Texans and make this place even better. Texans respect and appreciate that.
I knew my kids (even the La born ones) had arrived as Texans when they could articulate the benefit of building a wall. But they wanted more than a southern border wall. They wanted a wall to the East to keep the delusional hillbillies out.
Once you’ve reached this level, you’re a Texan because you understand why. It’s the last bastion of freedom in the US and our country needs us.

Preauxfessor moved there. I told him that if he bought a pickup truck I would buy a Woody (Toy Story) starter kit for him. He did. And I followed through.
Every month or so I check to see if he's hauled anything and so far he has not. All hat no cattle!

i am a proud Texan, but even i know this is bullshite. Texas is damn near purple and will be blue in our lifetimes.
Alaska is probably the ACTUAL last bastion on freedom. maybe Idaho for lower 48, but that is changing rapidly too.

It’s cool but the lack of greenery and food sucks. Food is bland, it doesn’t really have identity. Doesn’t know if it wants to be southern or Mexican.
Good luck finding decent Italian food.
It depends. Where I live yeah, the food definitely isn't as good as LA. But Houston, Austin are just fine food wise.
As for the greenery, it's pretty green here until summer.
The drought the last few years has been rough.
But, I don't miss flooding, hurricanes, constant humidity, etc. We get a bit of seasons. At least more than S. LA.
Mostly, I like that I'm not surrounded but worthless criminals and it's not flat.
