Retail theft 21x more likely when using self checkout

I’ve certainly forgotten to scan things in the past. Usually dogfood or anything else on the bottom rack of the buggy.

It’s really not all that surprising when you consider that these retailers never check on these folks when they’re doing it.
Add to that the fact that many of these municipalities wouldn’t charge people with a crime, even if they were caught.

Home Depot in Lake Charles is trying to get away from self-checkout. The manager wants it gone due to theft but corporate is fighting him. Now he has people "assist" you in self-checkout defeating the purpose of it since they scan everything for you and only let you punch the screen to complete the transaction.
Walmart too is opening more cashier isles and is said to be considering doing away with it on a national level or at least reducing it greatly.
I hate going to HD now because of the situation since I prefer self-checkout when I am in a hurry but per usual the dregs of society ruin stuff for the rest of us.

That's the cost of trying to skimp on labor by pushing off the bagging/ringing up items on the customer. A simple cost/benefit analysis should determine if it's worth keeping self-check-out kiosks.

I was never properly trained to operate the self-checkout before they stuck me there...so I was bound to make a mistake or two.

You put an unpaid laborer at a task they are untrained for, and you expect it to be done correctly?

My daughter was in a Walmart two nights ago and they had no check out registers at all open because none of the cashiers showed up to work.
It was self-check-out only with some long arse lines. I've never stolen or skipped scanning items, but that would probably have had me pissed off enough to do it just to get back at them.

The Walmarks over by me implemented 80% of their store to be self checkout.
A year later, they are going to 90% in-person cashier. Asked the GM about it and she said theft and that "people want someone else checking them out" (they don't).

Sadly, the government cannot instill morals and good character in a person.
That's why laws made in the name of "gun control" only hurt the law abiding citizens, because the criminals don't adhere to laws.
People with no morals are destined to do bad things and often times more than not, it ends up hurting others.
Shoplifters will continue to do so because they have no morals and think nothing of taking something from others.
They feel entitled to the stolen goods.

I forgot to pay for a box of cereal and a bag of chips the other day. I was putting bags into my cart while still pulling items out to scan and bag. The items just got hidden behind the other bags. I didn't notice until I was at my car putting my groceries away. I didn't go back inside to pay for them, so technically I stole them. I felt less guilty since it was store brand.
It made me think about the $6 of groceries I stole. It would just take 2 people doing that every hour to pay an employee.

Someone told me the other day if you use self checkout at Wal-Mart, scan all your items but save the most expensive for last. Before you scan the last item, click pay on the screen and say "Oh, I forgot something" and try to scan it, it will beep normally but the screen will say "item not found". Just hit ok and move on your way like you didn't see the message.
For the record, I have NOT done this. I'm not getting my face plastered all over Facebook by the PD looking for me.
