You’re right, it’s very hard to win without great qb play in the NFL. But Saban quit pretty fast. He didn’t want any of the NFL. Harbaugh made it work with Kap

Harbaugh is one of several coaches the past decade or so that, if given the same advantages as Saban both on an off the field, would do just as well if not better.

Saban, despite every advantage imaginable, has only gone unbeaten once, and needed officiating help in several games that year to do it. Saban has a roster of players where his second string could beat the majority of P5 teams. Saban doesn't have to worry about compliance issues. Saban had a Bama alum in charge of conference officiating. Saban had a Bama alum in charge of conference scheduling that was changing big match ups before the season began due to "bridge scheduling". The list goes on and on.

And when Saban still inevitably loses those big regular season games, the media swoops in to change the narrative every given year to give him a chance 120 other coaches would never get.

Reality is, with this set up, Bama should have MORE titles and more unbeaten seasons than they have. Coaches like Harbaugh, Meyer, Smart, among others, could do just as well with all of those advantages.

Not saying Saban isn't great. He is, especially when he has a competitive advantage. When he doesn't, he loses to teams like UAB and ULM.

I love how this fricker has whined and whined for over a month about the CFB committee being corrupt and "unfairly" putting Bama over FSU, yet here he is sucking off a coach that only won his first NC in the midst of a huge sign-stealing, cheating scandal. What a dipshit.

And lsu was top 10 multiple times with multiple SEC titles in the 45 years before Saban.

8 times in 45 years in the top 10. Twice between 1973 and when he took over. The last time they were ranked top 10 before he took over was 13 years prior.

First outright in the SEC twice and tied for first another 2 times. The last time tied for first was 12 years before he took over. 14 years before the last time they were first outright.

When he took over it wasn't a dumpster fire anymore, thanks to DiNardo, but it was still smoldering.

Still, his strength is that he is at least a very good coach, a great recruiter, a great roster manager, and an exceptionally organized program manager. Those last three are an integral part of becoming a legendary college head coach.

I do think Harbaugh is a better coach but also think he sometimes outsmarts himself with some of his game-time decisions. That is not unique to Harbaugh, however.

Bingo.

Competitive advantage is everything.

competitive advantage through superior coaching, retention and development.

wonder how Michigan won 8 games in a row after the news broke.

the last six games were against solid teams. 5 in the top 25 and 4 in the top 10, including the sec and pac12 champs.

when/if the details of this "investigation" come out, there will be a very good reason that it amounts to nothing.

Michigan fielded the best defense in cfb since 2021 uga.

GO BLUE!

Both are pretty good coaches and recruiters. Saban is great at halftime adjustments. Harbaugh is excellent at overall game scheme. Both plan well. In recruiting, take your pick. Harbaugh is every bit the recruiter that Saban is although I would give Saban the overall edge because his superpower is finding great edge rushers and OL.

Harbaugh developed this team entirely and started doing it in 2019. So many of his players last night were upperclassmen . Corum, senior. The WR, Senior. OL either seniors or graduates who had been at Michigan for at least 4 years.

I definitely agree with you here.

This is where we disagree. He failed miserably in the NFL.

Oh you mean ranking illinois, Minnesota, Purdue, Nortwestern, Nebraska, Michigan St at #23 or #25 before they play Michigan or Ohio St. every year what a gauntlet and let us not forget that tough Big 10 championship also.

Congrats to Michigan but there's a reason they have one championship in the last 30 years. Dabo Sweeney had the same advantage play in a shitty conference and you have a chance for better success.

He also led Michigan State to their best record in three decades back in 1999 (9-2). Not sure why that's being discounted here.

I think people are being petty

Sure Saban has his flaws but you don't sustain and win at the level he has consistently purely from just 'recruiting'. Seen plenty of examples of programs who recruit at a high level but underachieve every year. There has to be a sense of structure, competence and good program management to have done what he has done.

Honestly I'm impressed he got this Alabama team to the playoffs this year with Milroe at QB.

"He" didn't do shite. The media did it for him. LOLOLOL

Again, Saban gets chances 120+ other head coaches NEVER get and he gets praised for it.

OMG, he stole signs! Holy shite. That's just, awful.

Stealing signs is child's play compared to what Bama has done. There's a reason your program is the most penalized in the history of CFB.

really don’t know what people who say this expected Saban to do in two years with a Miami franchise that has been mostly abysmal since Dan Marino.

Maybe keep Drew B.?

Saban’s coaching value has always been the other days outside of Gameday. I think he’s a pretty good Gameday coach but he’s not the kind of guy who’s going to draw plays up in the dirt or constantly out scheme you. Where he beats you are on the other 364 days when in it comes to preparation, talent, and development. Saban is without a doubt the best program manager of all time. Love him or hate him, he would’ve excelled in any field given his work ethic and leadership skills.

Harbaugh has the luxury of playing in a conference where if you beat that one team you are pretty much guaranteed a playoff spot every year

Pretty much the case for saban also. The myth of an annual stacked sec is just that… a myth

LSU, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama have played in multiple Championship games and have alot of National Championships over the last 20 years so your post is not true. Michigan and Ohio St have like 2 national championship teams in that time frame and really no other teams in that conference have even played in the playoff or title game.

I think we're giving Harbaugh a little too much love here. He's won one national title and it took him ten years at a blue blood to do it. Until last night, he had lost six straight bowl games including an upset loss last year to TCU when Michigan was a 7 pt. favorite.
