We hunted a couple hours in the MS Delta and shot 4 mallards. His favorite part was watching the Chocolate Lab retrieve them. St Nick brought him a pretty nice pair of Lacrosse neoprene waders with 1000 insulation in the boots. My first set 30+ years ago were a pair of used Red Ball rubber waders that leaked. I told him back then the only neoprene equipment we had was a pair of gloves we all shared when putting out the decoys and he has no idea how lucky he is. Now that was the early 90s. What about you OB ? Tell the board about your first pair of hunting/fishing waders.

the fabric kind I think
I do know they leaked

when neoprene came out all they made was stocking foot, so we all bought a pair and cut off the feet and glued on a pair of boots with construction adhesive

Hodgeman (sp?). They were solid brown, neoprene and purchased from Kmart in the mid 90s. Those were very good waders that lated several years. My next pair, lacrosse, leaked within year 1.

I had some kind of neoprene, stocking foot wader's I'd put a wading boot on. They were great till you stepped in a hole and water goes over that lip.

I bought the neoprene stocking ones when they came out. I would wear old tennis shoes and duct tape them on so they wouldnt get stuck in the mud

Your son is luckier than mine. I made him wear rubber boots and jeans. Told him you gotta learn to be cold and tough. He’s 19 now and it’s worked out ok.

Eta: my waders are all taped up with duct tape and still leak.

Laugh if you want to, but the 30 year old me with those could...jump on a 4-wheeler or back of SXS, walk faster, move better, and not be near as exhuasted as my hunting party walking around in traditional waders.

Good times.

They were rubber, stocking foot and had converse chuck tailors to go with them. Sucked bigly.

Rubber hip boots with no insulation breaking ice on a rice field while dragging a pirogue behind me. Fell a couple times, got wet. Found a hole ducks were keeping open all night. Covered pirogue in rice stalks. Slaughtered the ducks that day while freezing my arse off. That was my first duck hunt. Hands and feet so cold they hurt when i thawed them by the fireplace at home

My first hunt was down in SWLa hunting the Sabine refuge. Been begging my dad to hunt ducks and he finally succumbed to the pressure. I didn't have any waders at the time, but he assured me we could get some when we met up with the guide. I never slept that night, about 10yrs old. We head off at 3, it's about a two-hour drive. Meet up with the guide at this bar that was packed with hunters. My dad asked the guide if he had an extra pair of waders for me, and he comes back from his truck with a pair of size 12's. I had two pair of socks on so no problem, wore size 8's at the time. We get to the spot by boat and head off into the marsh, and my first step, foot comes up, but boot doesn't. Down goes Frazier! My dad grabs me by my coat and picks me up. Well, we had about a 1/4-mile walk, and by the time we get there, I'm soaked head to toe, and its 32 degrees. I'm shivering and can't feel my feet, or fingers, barely able to hold on to the gun. I finally succumb and ask my dad to take me back, and it broke my heart to do so. The guide said he would, so back to the boat, falling often and to the truck we go. He takes me to his parents' house; he lived in an outside garage bedroom. Get naked dry off, and get in his bed, which was feather stuffed along with the pillows. Never slept better my whole life. Dad wakes me up, and the guides parents had washed and dried my clothes. Get to the grocery getter (our station wagon) and the back of it is full of geese and ducks. That Christmas he bought me a pair of hip boots. Only got to hunt with my dad twice before he died of cancer. But it was two great hunts being with him. Good for you OP.

It's 1992...

Playing Booray at a hunting camp in El Campo, TX at age 12, I cleaned house one night and won about $80 from the group. The next day my dad took me to the nearest outdoor store and we used the money to buy me a pair of size small neopreme stocking foot waders. We cut the boots off of the ragged hip boots I had and used them. They were already wet from that morning.

Flash forward to the next morning and I'm so proud to use my new waders. First thing's first, lets see if my boots dried overnight... Nope. Like a dumbass I say well, might as well get them on and soak my right sock before realizing I'm a dumbass and that the wader would keep me dry. Back up, put on waders, put on boots and all good except my right sock.

We go on a killer rag spread goose hunt, and after the hunt we pile the geese in the back of my dad's truck. I want to ride in the back with the geese. I crawl up on an old dry rotted cooler with the busted corners and rip the knee of my new waders. Mortified, I never said a word to my dad.

Got home and used silicon to patch the hole. It actually held up for a few years until I outgrew the set.

These say 1994, so it was whatever generation was out 2 years before these, but they are very close to what I had.

all I've used for the last 20 years is stocking foot waders with wading boots. if it's walk in hunting or requires exertion, stocking foot is far superior.

I'd wear them deer hunting when on public land. hike in and put a couple of goober-deep bayous between you and the access road and it opens up an entirely different public land experience.

Pretty sure mine were Redball. Canvas and rubber. No insulation whatsoever.

it was around 1988 or 1989.

had those for several years. One hunt it was cold. Really cold. Lows in the low teens. Buddy and I were hunting public land and got to the hole by boat. Slipped out of the boat and was making my way to the area we were hunting and had a log to get over. One foot over no issue, back foot got hung up and lost my balance. Not bad but front lip of my waders dipped under water and got a good bit of water in them.

Finished the hunt and was almost frozen. When we got back to the ramp I jumped out of the boat and it felt like a thousand needles sticking me all at once.

Never been that cold before or since..
