That’s not at as bad as most of you made it out to be.

He was consistently good to great for many years, but that doesn’t change the fact that something’s not been right with him for the last four. He had some big misses and reaches those last two years here that lead to a lack of quality depth. He also didn’t recruit particularly well at UF.

Raymond would be an improvement over what we had and maybe the complacency will be a thing of the past if he returns humbled after two years away. Hopefully. It would just really suck if he came back and it didn’t work out. That would be a mess.

Personally, I would still prefer to go younger with a guy like Jackson who could have a long run here as a DB coach, similar to Raymond years ago. But if Raymond is the hire, I won’t bitch about it further.

Why are people bitching and moaning about meaningless things. The DBU moniker came around 2011 after LSU had put Peterson, Claiborne, Mathieu, Reid, Taylor, Ron Brooks, J’ai Eugene in the league.

It was between 2010-2013 when LSU had like 3-4 straight first round DBs including several top 5.

That was Cooper building jt on what had been at LSU under Mallory and others before him. It peaked and earned the moniker then though.

But it doesn’t even matter to this discussion. What matters is Raymond was a damn good DB coach and had lots of success. Yes the last two years were rough but had a lot to do with scheme and other issues. Just like people blame Pelini for 2020 when he was forced to run a 4-3 by Orgeron despite not having the talent for it as LSU had been recruiting for a 3-4 scheme for years at that point.

Add in the turnover in players after the Natty and Covid limitations and you got the perfect disaster.

Raymond wasn’t blameless, but was way down the list.

He left/wasn’t retained because he was expecting Co-DC or even DC at that point. Kelly wasn’t going to give it to him and that ended it. He wasn’t “fired” for not being good enough. He had hardship at UF because their DC is just bad.

Again, is he a perfect hire? Maybe not, but he would be a good one. Bring him in along with Chevis to coach the DBs together and I think you’ll have a lot of success.

For the sake of argument to advocate for Raymond, could it be he’s at the point in his coaching life now that he wants to come home, coach the DBs at LSU and his days of chasing an extra buck or an extra coaching title is over? No doubt his last 2-3 classes at LSU were pathetic and no doubt he got burned on Surtain (arguably partially of his own making). But he’s coached and recruited a lot of very good players, most in-state, at LSU. A more mature Cory Raymond settled and focused on recruiting and developing DBs at LSU and no longer chasing the extra buck and interviewing on the side may work?

He recruited really talented players who didn’t need much coaching.

He never could teach zone defense which was probably why Aranda didn’t think much of him and wanted someone else to help coach the secondary.

Raymond maintained what Ron Cooper started just like Les miles maintained what Saban started.

I’m not sure he’s the guy for a rebuild but I suppose it depends on who we get as DC.

He is not the godfather. That would be RC. Give Cooper his due. He exclusively built DBU

I'm not going to bother reading this whole thread. It allways comes down to some TD posters only want young coaches. They hated the Denbrock hire but were all-in on Steeples. Heck, they didn't want BK because of his age, they wanted Lincoln, Napier, or Aranda. Same thing with CR now, he's too old, the game has passed him by, or he's not trying anymore. They know nothing.

Ron Cooper coached here from 2009-2011. Every accolade listed in the OP was after Ron Cooper left LSU.

LSU DBs were nationally recognized before Raymond got here. They had db’s seeing heisman hype and I believe that’s the bigger draw to getting the above mentioned guys.

We have been in the running for top tier QB talent that we never have consistently had and it’s not because of Joe Brady or Denbrock.

Raymond’s history at Florida
He was fired. Florida hired a coach on the decline. They got the same Raymond that left LSU. Some of you have short/convenient memories.

You are judging Raymond on yrs. aft.. NC and COVID I'm telling you it had a huge impact even Pelini was not the old Pelini. When the main man is "fat & happy" it affects All Fame can mess people up... So I've heard ??

Stingley from down the street so don’t give him a ton of credit for those

This tells me you don't mind talking out of your azz.

Like it or not, Raymond was the main influential recruiter for Lil Sting. And there was a very real attraction for Derek at Florida. So got to give Raymond his props on Derek24.

I started at 2015 since I wouldn’t give him as much credit for Mathieu and Simon ok the 2012 team.

Mathieu wasn't on the 2012 team.

I still say he's the godfather of DBU. I don't judge him for his last 2 years here when LSU football (and the entire world) was in disarray. Come back home Mr. Raymond.

I'll take Ron cooper over Raymond.

quote:

Ron Cooper Season 2024 LSU RON COOPER TITLE Defensive Backs Coach EMAIL football@lsu.edu Ron Cooper, with nine years of head coaching experience at the collegiate level, is in his third season with the Tigers as LSU’s defensive backs coach. Cooper has been responsible for overseeing perhaps the nation’s top secondary in 2011 as the Tigers feature two national award winners in Morris Claiborne (Thorpe Award) and Tyrann Mathieu (Bednarik Award). Claiborne (SEC Coaches) and Mathieu (AP) each picked up SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2011. It’s the second straight year that LSU has featured the Thorpe and Bednarik Award winners along with the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Patrick Peterson claimed all three honors in 2010 before being taken with the fifth overall pick in the NFL Draft. As a unit, LSU’s secondary accounted for 16 interceptions, nine fumble recoveries and 12 forced fumbles as the Tigers led the nation in turnover margin (+1.69) and ranked fifth in total interceptions with 18. LSU allowed just seven passing touchdowns all season, the fewest by a Tiger team since limiting opponents to only five in 1989. In his first two years with the Tigers, Cooper’s expertise coaching the secondary was evident as LSU had one of the best defensive backfields in the country. Last year, LSU led the SEC and ranked 10th in the nation in pass defense allowing 169.8 yards per game. Cooper’s first year at LSU saw Peterson earn second team All-America honors, while safety Chad Jones was picked in the third round of the NFL Draft. Cooper joined the LSU staff from South Carolina where he spent five years coaching on the defensive side of the football. As South Carolina’s safeties coach in 2008, Cooper assisted with a defense that ranked No. 1 in the SEC and No. 2 in the nation in pass defense allowing just 160 yards per game.

quote:

Cooper’s 1995 Louisville team led the nation in turnovers forced and finished No. 9 in the nation in scoring defense. A year later, Louisville ranked No. 4 in the country in both total defense and rushing defense.

He's also the coach who led the players walkout from practice without the head coach knowing about it! He was always pissed because O did not name him the defensive coordinator and stirred things up in the locker room and off the field with players and other coaches.

21 and 22 were atrocious. DBs literally didn't know where to be. Stingley and Flott did well in spite of that. It was bad man. Did you block those years out?

I’m not saying we should get him. Im in the camp for Chevis Jackson. How much does that have to do with the DC? Peking and Jones
