Did you pay taxes on your property when you bought it ? Why are you continuing to pay taxes on it now ? I wouldnt be thanking anyone they are stealing from you .

Property taxes are evil. If you want civilization you have to fund government, but the funding should 100% come from consumption taxes.

I’m going to pay about 13K total this year in fort bend for a three bedroom house.

I love renting my house from our glorious government.

Abbot definitely came through on this. Great job - something we would never say about government yet here we are.

You will get it next week and it will be due 12/31. what a joke.

I own a small property in Florida and they send several notices before all year so I can expect what to pay.

Fire and police coverage?

Sure there are some other taxes bundled in that you may not use, but there are two big ones that are nearly universally accepted as appropriate (police and fire).

FIFY.

Of all the forms of taxation, I go back and forth as to which one I hate the most: property taxes or estate taxes (death tax).

Because there is no income tax in Texas. They have to get it somewhere.

What did they do that dropped it?

What was the policy change?

Would it be better to fund public schools through an income tax?

Texas should probably tweak the balance a bit more from property to sales, but it’s worth noting that a property tax does incentivize commercial property owners to monetize their land…which better serves the economy of the state. Louisiana should try it.

Do you live out in the sticks to be paying that little compared to a lot of people?

Schools are also typically funded by property taxes.

Fire is appropriate but I'm not sure the amounts are appropriate. Fire departments are essentially car crash responders now.

All states have a property tax. I've always said a person doesn't actually own the land he bought. Don't pay your property taxes and you'll eventually find that out.

Don't property taxes primarily fund police and fire and other services? Is fire and police a one time setup charge or do they need continuing funding?

The part that does confuse me is what does the value of my home have to do with how much taxes I should pay to fund these agencies. Why is it not a straight tax? Guess it could be relative to inflation? If my house value goes up $20,000 in a five year period, should those agencies require and receive more money to operate?

I’d rather pay property taxes that stay local in my parish/county and the local school district than pay a state income tax that goes to Baton Rouge/Austin only to be redistributed back to local needs during the annual prostitution fest at the State Capitol.

Property taxes are proof you never own anything just rent it from the king or in our case the local government.

I own my home and large recreational acreage free and clear yet it costs me hundreds of dollars a month just to occupy those spaces
