Disagree. I think the Dodgers will probably recoup that money pretty quick. Ohtani isn’t just an American star. He’s an INTERNATIONAL star. There’s a lot of people in Japan and Korea. Add that to the Dodgers brand. I hate the Dodgers but they were the only ones that made sense

Breaking: The Dodgers are said to be investing $100 million in a Wuhan laboratory for gain of function research.

There's no way in hell they are recouping $700 MIL.

They’re going to make a killing in Asia

From a Marketing/Income perspective, this is a cash cow. They might easily triple that investment - he's a world wide sports star on the level of Reynaldo, Messi, Tiger, and Jordan.
On a salary cap level it looks like an absolute disaster for the Dodgers.

There’s that too
I don’t feel sorry for them.

MLB needs to put in a cap because there’s only like one other team that could have even come close to competing with that. Why the hell would an all star player go to a small market when an LA or New York team can just pay them with the same amount as the entire roster of a small market team

If they recoup a 1/3($210 MIL) than that should be considered a success but that's probably being Pollyannaish

They aren't recouping 700 million in jersey sales. And the shine and excitement of his signing will have worn off by May.

He was always going to be a Dodger. That was obvious.
But here's the thing: already 2 TJ surgeries and turning 30 next season. He will not be a pitcher for the majority of this contract. Most likely only pitches for 3-4 more years. So he'll be the 1B once Freeman is done in 4 or 5 years.
They overpaid but if they didn't someone else would have.

Yeah, if that's not proof the Bravos were never seriously entertaining him as an option.
AA would trade his first born for cash options before that. But congrats young man.

Almost all of these long term contracts are never worth it for the team. Anything more than 4-5 years is just dumb… the second half of this 10-year contract will be a disaster for the Dodgers.

It depends on how much is actually deferred. It will count as $70 million/year as far as the luxury tax goes, but they don’t care about that. If they did some sort of Bobby Bonilla deal where they’re paying him for 25 years after he retires (only instead of a $1 million check every year, his is for $25), and they’re only paying him $35-$40/year, they’re still gonna be able to be players in free agency every year. Hell, they might not be done this year. They can still afford that Asian pitcher for $300 million if they want.
Again, it all depends on how his contract is structured and how much is actually deferred.
And you are thinking micro, very little picture if you don’t think the Dodgers will easily recoup that $700 million investment. It has very little to do with wind and it will last MUCH longer than 10 years. They’ll be making hundreds of millions in Asia decades after he retires. Hell, decades after he dies. 100 years from now, kids all over Japan will be rocking Ohtani Dodgers jerseys and hats.
