I work in the industry. There is a lot of money, especially these days. But the captive agents you’re talking about don’t make the big money. I know multiple independent agency owners that make more than $1mm+ per year. Large commercial is where the money is, and that isn’t the State Farm’s of the world.

I work on the wholesale side at one of the big three. The top 40 brokers will all make more than $1mm this year.

Everyone in the top 200 will make at least $300k.

FYI… The downside to my job is that I don’t work 9 to 5. I work whenever people want me to. And I never get to take a real vacation where I just “check out.”

I know multiple SF and Allstate agents that live in 7 figure homes. Can't be that bad lol.

A life with cell phones and instant gratification means no one takes a real vacation anymore.

You probably go silent Thanksgiving day and the day after, Xmas Eve and Day, NYE and day and when you retire.

What are you doing on the wholesale side?

One of the benefits to B2B wholesale is working business hours.

If you are underwriting, I understand that your workload could have you pulling 12 to 14 hour days.
If you are an area manager (sales), I understand that you could be on the road a ton.

But B2B in general is business hours. A customer isn't expecting me to make a cold call at 8pm. Nor are they expecting a return phone call at 10pm.

I’ll try to save you here. We can get you out of this… I promise! You were referring to doctors in Mexico, right… right?!

Nurse anesthetists average over $150K in my area (two of my friends have been N.A.s for about a decade and are knocking on $200K).

Where is this? That seems low. CRNAs in Lafayette start around $190-220k depending on service.

I know house supervisors making $130-140k with some overtime in Lafayette.

Anyone know about HR salaries/outlook? My kid is a senior in HS and is thinking of going into human resources. With the younger generation, he is betting that companies will need to do a lot more hand-holding of employees. Plus he’s not really good with math or science but loves being the leader of school teams and clubs.

I was a captive agent with a major multi-line insurance company. Broke 100k level in year 5. Retired after 20 years. Was nice having a renewal base of 200k plus. Everything you sold in new business was gravy. I retired close to 10 years ago. Today's dollars would be more, especially in light of the significant rate increases over the last few years. If you worked hard, built your book, took care of your clients, you did not have to chase new clients. Your clients sent family and friends to you.

IMO this is a topic of its own. I would personally never tell anyone to go into HR. Does he like doing paperwork all day and firing people?

Recommend starting this as a new thread.

HR is as much about legal protection as it is about training and development of people. It’s generally the most disliked organization in a company. They don’t really understand the way the business operates yet hold the strings on org approvals from an ivory tower.

There are a decent number of role types in “HR” so it’s not all created equally.

Tell him to focus on business critical roles. HR is not that.

You don’t need to be super technical to progress quickly and far in most large companies. Having people skills, taking initiative, being decisive and pulling the right people into a room to fix or change something is a skill only about 2-3 people out of 10 have.

You can lead any function with those characteristics, long as you have a basic understanding of the function and business.

Yeah, base pay for fully qualified (post intern/post residency) MDs has to be roughly $200k or even a little more nowadays. There is a good slice that settle in that $300k to $500k range, but MDs still outperform almost every other wage earner on an aggregate basis.
