Still super depressing that a half million dollars pretty firmly lands you in middle/upper middle class in most major cities these days. No one is hurting by any means at that rate but 2-3 kids, a house big enough for them, a couple reasonable vacations/year and that money really isn't going that far towards "building wealth". Crazy times.
Well what do you mean by major city?
Yea that ain’t getting it done in the top end cities like LA SF NYC DC etc but there are plenty of “big” or “major” (imo at least) cities where you can easily build wealth with that income.
I live in the heart of a metro area of nearly 3 million people, not really that close to 500k a year and I am building the frick out of some wealth lol. And I bought my current house at the top of the housing market.
Just the vanilla tax advantaged accounts for a dual income household (401k, HSA and IRA) is almost 70k/year and that’s before any employer matching/contributions.
Assuming even a modest match at 4-5% gets you into the 80s per year in savings before putting a dime of your take home pay towards investments.
Now I guess you and I might have different definitions of wealth. I think a ~5M portfolio (not including your primary home) in your mid to late 50s is pretty wealthy. But you may have bigger aspirations.

Fair.
But retiring with 5-10M doesn't really feel like "wealthy" to me anymore.
That feels like I did a good job saving, can split time between two warm places and help my kids when they need it.
Hell, owning 2 nice places to split time in retirement takes a massive chunk out of that alone.
I guess that is a luxury to some but my Air Force grandfather owned a lake house in Arkansas, a house in Sarasota Florida 3 blocks from the beach and a few time shares in Colorado.
Hate to be the old man at clouds but no chance in hell someone with even average to upper average income can do that these days.

You are describing a very upper class lifestyle. Like top half a percent.

We don’t have “a number” per se but cracking $5M investment portfolio is a prime benchmark. A $10M portfolio is more than I even want to plan for even if we could achieve it.

That’s a better retirement than 99% of folks.

Fully understand my view is skewed.
But again, coming from perspective of someone with a career military grandfather, who was a first generation college student and had all those things happen, it makes you think.
Likely one of those one off stories and a perspective vaccuum for me but its all true and feels significantly harder to attain these days for an average earner.

You can find some awesome properties without spending a ton of money to maintain them. I have an extremely nice villa in mexico and I think our yearly property taxes are $500 and utilities are like $200/mo.

Not sure why you got so many downvotes. Being a Captain at a large carrier or freight company like UPS or FedEx will definitely get you up into the $300k stratosphere.

When I was at LSU I didn't even know what IB was. I had one friend who was going into it. Probably the only person I know who was making sure he had a 4.0 and wasn't trying to get into med school. He was from Houston and his dad helped him get setup with his first gig and it was tough for him, I remember we would be out after work and he would come have one beer, grab food to go and head back to the office. He is crushing it now.
