There are really two questions/points here:

Can you stop rooting for them and sleep at night with the reasons?

Will it be a good reason when explaining to others why you don't root for the team anymore (or possibly root for another team)? If not, do you care?

On the second point, most people would get things like "I moved away from the city", "I disagree with ownership because of X", etc.

I’m not sure anything done during the confines of the game allows you to abandon a team from the city you were born in or college you attended, but I guess there is always a losing threshold.

If they start doing stuff outside the game (politics, social issues, criminal activity) you should be free to abandon them.

I guess the question is how much losing allows you to seek fandom elsewhere.

They'll always be my team, but I really took a step back and stop letting Falcons losses get to me after 28-3

Thoughts? And yes, I know it's not that serious.

Imo there are a couple considerations. Why were you a magic fan to begin with? And where do you live?

I think it’s completely fine to swap teams to a team in your local market. I could never be a fan of a team far removed from me (I don’t think I could ever feel a legitimate connection).

I definitely get frustrated watching the Pels and Saints, so when I don’t want to watch those games I just bet on other games and become a “fan” of another team for a night.

I’m right there with ya with the orlando Magic.

Been a die hard fan since the very beginning of the franchise and I just can’t take it anymore supporting them.

The fact that they can’t build a competitive team after Dwight… the fact that every single season the fans want to lose and tank and the fact that every fricking Magic gear (hats, shirts, etc) are constantly ugly and cheesy keeps pushing me further and further away

It's impossible if you've been a fan for a long time. As a six year old I became a Reds fan in the late 70's during the tail end of the Big Red Machine. From that point until 2000 the Reds had the second best record in the NL over that time period and won a Championship. Starting in 2001, it's been straight poop. Bad owners, bad luck, cheapness, etc. I can't drop them though. Thay are intwined with me. Everyone who knows me knows me as a diehard Reds fan. I've tortured my son bringing him up as a Reds fan also. He's never seen winning and could've easily found another team, but like myself he can't let go. They are like a bad drug. We have hope every year that this is going to "be" the year, but alas it never happens. I know we have a young exciting team. I'm sure they'll find a way to screw iy up, but I'll be there watching and hoping. I can't let go.

they move
you’re from a. city with no team and move to a city with a different team than you supported before. you can then support the local team
your child plays for a new team.

that’s about it.

5 years ago I would have said there is no excuse if you're truly a fan. But I've been a lifelong Manchester United fan and they are absolutely testing my theory. We suck, the owners don't want to do what is necessary to compete, the players don't seem to play with any heart, like 5 domestic violence allegations/chargers in the last few years, owners put the team up for sale and then refuse to entertain any offers than aren't astronomically higher than the franchise is worth leaving the club in limbo.

Edit: But as the great Eric Cantona once said: "You can change your wife, your politics, your religion, but never, never can you change your favorite football team."

this right here. I would go to a few games a year and watch as many on TV as I could. Knew every players name , I couldn’t name you one players name now. I still say Dale Brown had some type of influence on getting rid of the General. Woody really shite the bed on this one

I’m glad I’m at the point in my life where I don’t let how my favorite sports team does really affect me at all outside of the “yeah that sucked”. Much happier now and enjoy the games a lot more. Im also past that point of spending money to go to crappy games because of some sort of weird obligation to support the team through thick and thin. If the product sucks why should I spent my money going to watch a game that isn’t enjoyable?

lol, that's a business entity. All professional sports teams exist solely for entertainment and to make money. If you want to quit the magic go right ahead, it'd be no different than turning off a show and watching another.

I walked away from the Commies, as did many others. And it’s not about being a terrible team, because I’m a Wizards fan but to drag the old name through the mud, change the name to Washington football team which took a little while getting used to and then to switch it up one more time to a name most mocked with a terrible nickname to boot along with a scumbag owner..yeah I decided to no longer spend money supporting that trash. It wasn’t the team I grew up with and then they trot out some XFL - Wal Mart brand jerseys along with the all blacks…it just seemed sacrilegious.

With that being said, the new ownership will hopefully go back to the Redskins or at least change the name from the terrible Commies and I’ll return when that time is here. Until then I just cheer for the Bengals but it’s not the same.

It would be like the Saints offending a religious group and bowing down to the twitter mob, changing their name to New Orleans football team and then saying f you to the fans, we are changing our name to the New Orleans Second Liners. Oh and then throwing out an all purple jersey.

If I was a Penn State football fan, I would have stopped supporting the program after the university covered up the molestation of dozens of children over a period of 15 years. Paterno knew about it and did nothing. The school president, vice president, and the athletic director not only knew about it, but were all charged with perjury, obstruction of justice, and failure to report suspected child abuse. The FBI's report found "total and consistent disregard...for the safety and welfare of Sandusky's child victims", and "empowered" Sandusky to continue his acts of abuse by failing to disclose them.

There are football program that I otherwise dislike such as Texas (arrogant), Notre Dame (spoiled, special NBC snowflakes) or Kansas (rivals). But I sincerely find Penn State to be deplorable and rotten to the core. frick 'em.

Moving away from a city seems to be a justifiable reason
