Was the d line. Coaches and fans alike knew that the secondary would be weak this year, and it seems that the staff’s remedy to this was to get pressure with 4. Problem is they haven’t. Wingo was playing hurt (then couldn’t play), Maason Smith doesn’t even give a shite, and guys they’ve rotated in haven’t played with an edge. The d line’s inability to get pressure makes the entire defense vulnerable, and the defensive coaches haven’t had an answer (the same defensive coaches that lost their top DB commit yesterday).

Maason has been a problem all year, but he looked pretty good against Florida. It could be that Florida is that bad, but it was at least encouraging to see him be able to take advantage of that.

Easy: INJURIES

~ Secondary especially
~ Both defensive captains are out (Brooks and Wingo)

CBK needs to really add some great defensive players for 2024.

LSU is below average on DL, and at DB. Linebackers are probably average...maybe.

But, you are right that poor coverage with no pass rush is a deal breaker.

However, the think that made us a historically bad defense was when our defensive backfield became so thin we had guys that couldn't even play sound. We've now adapted to such a soft scheme that it's very hard for us to make a stop at all.

That's really only applicable to Wingo.

Smith has been, by far, the biggest disappointment on the defense. He's done nothing of note all season and has, arguably, been the least effective of the 4 DTs LSU has played. When you are projected as a 1st round pick, All SEC type player, you can't be a complete no show.

The decision to bulk up Savion Jones has proven to be incredibly dumb. House took was was a really good player from a year ago and made him a non-factor.

Swinson as been the only (somewhat) bright spot (with Jefferson to some degree) on the DL.

At every level the play has been bad. The personnel decisions and terrible approach has made it much, much, worse. Good coaches find a way to get the best out of what they have...even if the best may not be great relative to the competition. Bad coaches whine and complain about lack of personnel or injuries rather than trying to work with what they have.

The personnel and depth is the reason this isn't a great, or even "good" defense. House is the reason it isn't average. He has joined the ranks of Lou Tepper. DCs who torpedoed what otherwise should have been a really good season.

All 3 levels in my opinion. To have the worst defense in 100 years it takes all of them. And coaching too.

Injuries somewhat, but most SEC teams are playing freshman at key spots on defense. Bama played 2 of them.

It was partly the d line but our LB’s and that includes our starter at Jack (#2) are not SEC caliber. It’s on House and his staff for not coaching up the defensive side to be more competitive as the year has gone on. Injuries have exposed just how thin we are on defense talent wise.

looking back to the month leading up to FSU, we all thought the D line was a strength........in hindsight i think losing our DL coach was a bigger blow than we initially thought.

also, smith not being the force we thought he could be has definitely hurt.

add in the confusion with perk, then losing brooks followed by the other injuries.

not making any excuses for this staff as i feel a change is needed, but damn that was some crooked horseshoe shite here.......and it happens at other places too. we just lived it, and it sucked since our offense was so damn good.

LBs by far. No run fit, and when they seldom do they mostly miss tackles. Slow on side to side chase and cover. They were ok in pass coverage but most of the passes on us were deep and to the sideline.

I don`t think fans understand the pyscological affect
of losing your team caption and QB of the defense when
Greg Brooks was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Then one of your defensive coaches colapses and also has a serious
ailment. Those are 2 emotional things 17 to 21 year olds
have had to deal with.It is only football.

The transfer portal after Orgeron was fired. Brian Kelly having to hire new staff and try to hold on to commits. Only 38 scholarship players on roster, and recruiting was almost an insurmountable task to ask for any coach to come into. Not having a Defensive line coach due to illness. NIL and recruiting for coaches has made it miserable . The bleeding of players on defense showed this year.

I swear to god it is so mind numbingly ridiculous that Swinson and Whitt Weeks aren't playing every down over Speights and Oghoufo. If they did our defense would be much more exciting. Swinson gets to the QB every freaking game and then gets benched because he doesn't just get stood up at the line like Oghoufo.
