I'm expecting some big moves now. 2 or more of Ohtani, a Soto trade, an Alonso trade, 1-2 free agent starting pitchers, etc.
I’m gonna temper my expectations a wee bit lol
But yes, he didn’t come here for us to be poor like the Brewers.

If you look at the everyday lineups this past season for Brewers vs Cubs, there’s no way Milwaukee should have won that division…except that they have a much better manager

Hopefully in this spending spree they somehow manage to grab a few guys for the bullpen.

Stearns no longer being in the organization is obviously the bigger blow but still, the brewers were one of the most well run organizations and are now without some big reasons

I'm surprised, but if it means they are about to spend money on FA's I am all for it

Ross did a great job a Chicago last year.

Cubs had a 92.4% chance to make the playoffs after sweeping the Giants on 9/6. Ross has the most talent in a bad division

Would be funny considering the Mets think he's their next manager.

That would be my only reservation if I were a Cubs fan. The history of all sports are filled with coaches/managers that consistently overachieve with lesser talent, but they fall short when they take that step up into an organization that gives them all the tools to succeed.
Being a scrappy underdog that wins more games than they should takes a different approach than a team that’s expected to win pennants and championships.

That's a good point. Especially when you take a look at a couple things:
One of the most frustrating things this past season was watching the Cubs beat the shite out of a team 20 to something one day, then losing 5-6 the next day or two. Those extra inning and one-run losses are brutal and that boils down to game management in most cases.
I'm just surprised the Cubs made this move this abruptly. Pleasantly surprised at least. I guess Ricketts is gonna spend some money.

This is awesome news. I actually asked for this exact thing about a month ago as I was lamenting their September nosedive, but I wasn't even being serious.

Yikes. Hire a total failure from your same division.
Love it.
Love it.

I love Ross, and he was a great clubhouse guy and motivator, but his in-game decisions weren't the best. I think Counsell is a significant upgrade, and if the Cubs spend some money this offseason it could be a similar effect to what Joe Maddon had on the 2015 team.
(Not saying this team is as talented as that one is, but they should take a leap to the top of the division with a few added pieces)

Isn't he considered one of the better managers in all of baseball?

Absolutely, the difference was on the margins and the Brewers were much better on the margins and mainly because Counsel was much better at this than Ross....I've seen some Cub fans try to plead Rossi's case and how baseball is so random, so many 50/50 calls, he was hamstrung by Jed...blah, blah, blah.
Bottom line if there were WAR for managers Rossi's IMHO would be near the bottom and Counsel's near the top.
quote:I am too, I was actually very disappointed in the "vote of confidence" because it had become painfully apparent to most Cub fans that were being honest with themselves that Rossi was costing us games relative to what a top tier manager could get us...and cost us a trip to the playoffs this past year.
