Weight loss drugs may be linked to stomach paralysis, other rare but severe issues

Blockbuster weight loss and diabetes drugs like Wegovy and Ozempic may be associated with an increased risk of three rare, but severe, stomach conditions in non-diabetic patients, according to a new epidemiological study released Thursday.
The study, published in the research journal JAMA, comes as Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy, Ozempic and similar treatments skyrocket in popularity in the U.S. for their ability to cause dramatic weight loss over time. But those drugs, known as GLP-1s, are also facing increased scrutiny after some patients reported experiencing stomach paralysis and suicidal ideation while taking them.
GLP-1s work by slowing digestion to suppress a person’s appetite but can cause problems if that process slows down too much.
Researchers at the University of British Columbia said the conditions in the study include one disorder not named in the warning labels for those drugs: stomach paralysis, which slows or completely stops the movement of food from the stomach to the intestine and can cause symptoms like persistent vomiting.
The study also notes an increased risk of bowel obstruction, a disorder where food is blocked from passing through the small or large intestine, and pancreatitis, which refers to pancreas inflammation. The labels for the drugs already include warnings about pancreatitis and certain types of bowel obstruction.

It always shocks me most anti vax people are the first one to blindly put supplements or bs prescribed medicine down their gullets.

ummm been discussed 100 times on here, thats how they work lol for the most part. but most of these issues come from people jumping to a really high dose because they refuse to use the small dose and use life style interventions like diet and exercise to make big changes
many on the drugs refuse lifestyle changes and jump directly to higher doses which brings along higher chance of these side effects. still rare they happen though.

But Ozempic is a magic. Lose weight easily with no repercussions. 75% of the OT says so.

The easiest way to avoid becoming a behemoth is through diet and exercise. But the fatasses will do anything to avoid that.

The more common response I hear is 'I'm healthier skinny and overmedicated/mismedicated than I am fat'.

I am of the notion that if something is too good to be true than it probably is.

Correct.
Also not getting it from a doctor that has a good knowledge of the how the drug works. The SO’s doc covered all of this. Encouraged him to continue with his probiotic, increase his fiber for motility assistance, and most importantly to exercise (which also increases gut motility).
He’s had some nausea and initially had some mild diarrhea but hasn’t run into constipation/blockage issues. He’s probably the most normal he’s been in decades in that regard. We’ve had a couple of hypoglycemic drops at night but he’s on a continuous monitor so it’s easy to get out in front of it.

We should probably just make a GLP1 forum at this point. This thread comes up multiple times a week.
Yes, we all know there are side effects and a small percentage of those people end up with stomach paralysis because of it. That doesn't change this it's extremely beneficial to the majority of those that take it.

Saw this headline this AM: WalMart Declining Food Sales
quote:
Walmart Inc. (NYSE:WMT) indicates that there has been a decrease in shopping demand due to the use of appetite-suppressing medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy.
According to a report by Bloomberg, Walmart, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, is analyzing changes in sales trends using anonymized shopper data. The retailer can evaluate purchase changes amongst individuals using the drug and contrast those habits with similar people not using the medication.

Oh goodie! Another OT thread where the board hates on fat people AND people trying to not be fat.
FFS. I get that some use the drug irresponsibly but at least they are doing something. Eat less and move more works but responsible use of Ozempic to get people kick started on weight loss is a good thing for those of us paying higher insurance costs because of fatties. Encourage them.

correct and even better is having a doctor that understand the nutrition and muscle/aesthetics/strength portion of the equation
simply put, most of these people going on the large doses right away are going into very very steep caloric deficits. We already know big time caloric deficits cause lean tissue loss, even when protein is decently high when not accompanied by strength training.
well most of these people the article is talking about have no lifestyle interventions, no strength training, are not tracking protein and giber and wonder why they suddenly are skinny but lost 50% of their lean body mass.
Dr Andy Galpin has talked about this a ton and recently Dr Kyle Gillett did a podcast with the Barbell shrugged crew where he talked about this.
if you are thinking about going on a GLP-1 listen to this show before doing it LINK so that you are informed
now i 100% support people using GLP-1 and other obesity drugs. But i support it as part of a full life style change. I.e. nutrition coaching, daily step goals and resistance training coaching. I also believe if you are going to use a GLP-1 it should be used in the presence of hormone optimization. For some that may include testosterone, but atleast a monitoring and a optimization of free test and 100%(outside of those with cancer or those in remission) in all cases the use of ghrh/ghrp to stimulate large amounts of grow hormone to not only aid in the fat reduction, but to help the loose skin issue you see in so many.
i also beleive in minimum effective dosing and beleive you should aim to lose about 4 lbs per month once one is not longer morbidly obese.
the goal in the end should be to be health and better looking. not just health and skinnier with extra skin everywhere.
