Is The Walking Dead a good show to start watching?

I don’t believe I have ever seen a single episode. But I am thinking about starting at season 1 and seeing if it’s any good.

To start watching... yes, but it sucks to finish watching. It became a chore.

It was one of the top shows on TV the first several seasons. Based on the popularity of the threads on this board I'd say most of us checked out during seasons 6 and 7. I don't regret watching it and I also don't regret not knowing what happened after I stopped.

At the very least, the first 4 seasons are good to great. After that, it starts to gradually go downhill.

The first five or six seasons are top notch.

as others have said up to and through 6 is pretty damn good tv.
a character get introduced at end of 6 and if you want to see that through it goes to season 8. you might want to be prepared to skip anything not directly relating to that main line though. stop after that for sure. its all garbage after that. i watched it all because something wrong with me.

Yes, but if you have an OCD about finishing things like me you’ll end up wasting days of your time watching until the end.

The writer's strike probably won't be over by the time OP gets through the last season.
OP, do NOT watch the spin off, "Fear the Walking Dead." Do not.

Seasons one through three are great. But it goes to shite in season four and remains on a steady decline until it ends. Seasons 4 and beyond are filled with the laziest writing imaginable and the episodes are so goddamn boring, slow and predictable. You spend the entire episode waiting on something interesting to happen but it never does. Literally the only good episodes after season 3 are almost always the premiere, mid-season finale and the season finale. The rest just feel like boring filler episodes that drag on and on and on.
For frick's sake, they spend an entire episode in a later season looking for a light bulb in a movie theater. That's the whole episode.
It's like they have an idea for the beginning and end but don't know how to get you from point A to point B.
Keep in mind they fired Frank Darabont (an academy award winner) and in season 4, handed the show over to a hack who was mostly known for writing Saturday morning cartoons.

Echoing what others said. The first four or five seasons or so are fantastic. After that, the decline begins.

Yes, for the first few seasons.
Then it goes off the rails

The first few seasons are great. After that it drops significantly as you can only rehash the same “here are the new people that are going to kill us” storyline so many times. I think the end of the arc with the Governor is where I recommend to pull the cord.
Similar to Yellowstone with the “here are the new people that are going to steal our land” schtick.
