Going to Carmel California next week and plan to do a day trip to SF. We are planning on going to Mama’s for brunch in North Beach, Muir Woods, Fisherman’s Wharf and Alcatraz. What pro-tips do you guys have for parking while in SF so that we don’t get our vehicle burglarized? I hear parking on the street is a no-no but wanted to hear from locals or others who have figured it out. TIA

I don't know about parking in the city but when we went years ago to Muir woods you had to get there early to get a parking spot.

My parents just did a month long trip out west and visited San Fran for a day. Parked in a garage while there and vehicle got broken into. Suitcases and other stuff stolen.

ETA: parked in paid parking at Pier 29.5

I have been there a bunch of times. That used to be one of my favorite cities in the US to visit. Not anymore. It is a shame what has happened to it. The only reason for me to go there now is to rent a car at the airport and drive to Napa.

Do not under any circumstances drive a vehicle & park it in San Francisco whether it be your own vehicle or a rental. If you rent & decide to do this take out all the insurance you can. Uber or taxi everywhere. If you do drive and park in the city if something happens it is on you. It is pretty simple. The citizens of the city voted for this situation whether they realize it or not.

They will need to make reservations for Muir. They only allow so many vehicles at a time.

Park the car in a safe neighborhood and Uber. Look at the poop maps. There are a lot less bums when you get up to the northwest/west part of the city.

Do not have any luggage or valuables in your car. Seriously. Do. Not.

The Tenderloin area is beautiful for a self guided walking tour at night.

Why not just park the car at SFO, then catch an Uber into the city?

Thanks for all the warnings and suggestions guys. I bought tickets to Alcatraz but may just eat that $300 and forget SF. It’s not worth the hassle and worry. I used to love going there. What a shame they have let it become so crime infested.

Go south through the central wine country toward San Luis Obispo instead.

San Francisco is amazing, but don’t try and do all that. Pick 2.

I would instead go visit Santa Cruz for a bit, drive West on 1 and stop at Panther Beach, check out the rock arch and then the hidden cave…drive up 1 to Pescadero and eat at Duartes, cream of green chili soup, drive east from there up through the redwood groves and down into Los Gatos if you’ve got to get back or on top the ridge to Ben Lomond…really dreamy up there.

We will be in Carmel for 4 days. Playing golf, going to Big Sur one day, then the day at SF. We may still hit SF but it’s iffy now. Love those tips though. May sub in some of those if we skip SF.

I am on my way home from SF right now. Definitely recommend Uber or Lyft instead of driving. FYI, Muir Woods requires a reservation for parking.

By the way, the horror stories of SF are waaaaaay overblown. Keep your arse away from the areas you have no business and there are rarely any issues. We had a great visit!

If you leave shite in your car, it will be stolen. Don't do it.

Completely disagree. It was worse than I expected and I saw multiple breakins and crimes in broad daylight in heavy tourist areas

If you are really worried you can take the BART from the east bay or even park and take the ferry from Marin.
