What makes Westpac storms so much stronger?

You see, we have this desert that spends most of summer dumping dry dusty stable air into the basin.

The WPac? Nothing but ocean behind the storms. They typically aint fighting dry air.

Secondly, the water is about as hot as anywhere on earth in parts of that basin.

Third, often benign wind shear and conducive upper levels to maximize potential.

The Atlantic just rolled one of those scenarios. The WPac rolls them far more often.

The scariest one I ever saw was Andrew's, with it's northern eyewall focused on my sister and BIL. They had just finished building the house 8 months earlier. House didn't survive, but they did, living in the ruble for 2 weeks. On the plus side, I got a nephew 9 months later.

I generally prefer land under my storms, but watching a tropical system come together in a near perfect parameter space with (for now and hopefully throughout) no threat to land is just about as good as it gets for weather watching. Something about seeing Nature maximize its potential is hard to beat, even in the face of that awe and sometimes terror inspiring power.
