What do people do who don’t have enough money for retirement?

I’ve heard that some have to resort to eating cat food or dog food. That seems like a horrible existence.
There must be other things that people can do though. A lot of people don’t have retirement savings, and I’ve never actually met a person who eats cat/dog food.
Do they move in with their kids or just keep working part-time?

They do exactly what im gonna do- they move overseas to a LCOL country where you can “live like a king” on a $1500 a month SS check.. not a joke.. hell, ill probably do that even if i *can* afford to retire in America, cause ur money goes a lot farther in other parts of the world , so you can typically retire a lot earlier .

This is the answer. My mom didn’t save or plan for anything. Went bankrupt in ‘08 when the real estate market crashed. Moved her into a house I bought. She’s been there ever since. Rent free and balling on her SS. Truly an example of what NOT to do in almost every conceivable way. Doing my best to do the opposite of everything she’s done.

I bought my extra house in 08-09. It was a reverse mortgage where the owner had died. They basically gave the house away. Wish I had bought 10 more.
