Woodford is good and also Bulleit

Some would say you should probably being using a high proof rye for your old fashioneds. Bulleit Rye is good, Sazerac, and Russell's Reserve are all good too. I am sure there are many others as well.

I like to use Wild Turkey 101. Solid value, good proof for cocktails.

No one has said the correct answer. Pre bourbon fad i did an old fashioned comparisons with a bunch of friends and it was unanimous. I compared the winner with Knob Creek, Markers, Buffalo Trace....... The winner is.....

Regular Old Grand Dad. 80 proof so you can drink several. About $17 a bottle. And makes an unbelievable old fashioned.

I typically use Wild Turkey 101 for my bourbon cocktails. In fact, I'm drinking a Wild Turkey 101 Old Fashioned right now. It's a little more... rough and tumble than a lot of bourbons, so I find it works well in an Old Fashioned, like a rye whiskey might if you're looking for less sweetness.

I’ll add Early Times BiB to the list. All quality choices for easy to find, low priced, 100 proof options.

So this peaked my interest and went looking at diff recipes and some of them went into the history. Initially Rye whiskey was the original version of the Old Fashioned.
I believe when that became harder to obtain bourbon became the standard.
You guys got me in the mood for old fashions. I'll have to buy me some sugar cubes, bitters, muddler, Luxardo cherries and oranges this weekend.
