I have an older McPhearson bow that needs cables/strings. It has been a great little unit that always shot straight, quiet and fast.

I in my mid 50's with a few shoulder/back issues and don't bowhunt a whole lot but when I do I want a good dependable unit.

Do I rebuild it and enjoy it while I can or go ahead a make the jump to a crossbow.

My conundrum is this. Traditional archery is literally in my blood. My family has a rich history of it. I have an Aunt that's been women's national champ twice and my great uncle did the archery shooting in the Errol Flynn Robin Hood movie and was running buds with Fred Bear.

Do I make the jump and home my ancestral archers don't come out of the ground and get me or say piss on tradition and make the jump.

Don’t be a pussy. Shoot your bow until you physically can’t. Don’t disappoint your family name.

There are plenty older bows, some in almost new shape, for sale.

Crossbow is fun. But you feel that missing accomplishment with a kill. It does become too easy. I would shop for a new to me older bow.

I have this bow. I love it. Restrung last year . Got it tuned correctly.
You would have to investigate the correct modules. Maybe it’s already correct.

Thanks for the input. I was leaning towards repair. I think I'd prefer just restringing vs another bow even if it costs more just because I'm comfortable with it and know it's quirks.

XBow.

You’ve done your time and don’t mess up anything else or you won’t be able to xbow one day.

I fell 15 Ft out of a climbing stand last time I bowhunted 12 years ago

Limped half mile to truck, fuel pump went out and wouldn’t crank. No cell service. Limped 2 miles to farm shop grabbed a work truck, went to pick my buddy up who o dropped off at another spot. Got truck stuck. Blew up motor trying to get out. Swore never to bow hunt again

If you decide to buy a new x bow, I would look at some of the newer compounds. I’m 56 with a bad shoulder and only pull 60 pounds, but the newer bows shoot really well at that weight.

I’m not ashamed to say that my new Mathews is a 60# bow. It’s pretty sweet

Sounds like 2 things:

1) a PSA for safety harnesses
2) a country music song

There ain't any shame in going to a crossbow if you need to. Go whichever you think will let you enjoy the woods the most.

I'm with you on this one except I'm not that old.

I'm 37, but way too many years of pitching and baseball have left my shoulder in shreds. I still need to have my labrum and rotator cuff repaired. My arm is sore for days after throwing the softball with my daughter.

I can pull 60lbs back but it's not pretty and it hurts to hell and back. I'd scare every deer in a mile radius away. I'm starting to look at crossbows and will welcome the shame from my buddies

I get that you may want to repair it but I would encourage you to get one of the newer bows. The technology has gotten so much better you can shoot more weight with less stress on your body. The let off on some of the PSE and Elite bows is quite impressive. Find a bow shop and shoot a few of them and incorporate it into your decision. I would avoid the cross bow as long as possible. It's harder than it looks and for me just not the same. If you're going to spend the money consider all of your options.

I suspect you're a frugal guy like me and Kinda loyal to the one that brought you to this point and that really cool. But if you get the right bow you can shoot it another 15 years. Bow technology has made drastic improvements the last 5-8 years.

Just my 2 cents...best of luck in your decision.

Sounds like you have a lot of Trad Bow folks in your background.

Go to a local bow shop and try out an Elite on the low 50-60lbs setting. You will be surprised how smooth and forgiving it is. Not just Elite, there are many now.

If you are related to Howard Hill a crossbow is not an option!

Sounds like you need a "Hill style" longbow. Those don't have cables at all.
