Another problem is that airlines bounce their planes on routes all over the country, so a single storm in one part of the country causes rippling delays across flights all over the place. I’m sure there are reasons for it, but it seems like if you kept planes isolated on relatively consistent routes going back and forth between 2 or 3 airports, you could cut way down on delays by isolating weather related issues.

Really!! I suspect they do the ‘easiest’ thing, which is also probably the least extra expense for airline.

I have so many questions about this trip. Why the hell did you fly into Birmingham via Charlotte rather than flying Peoria to ATL and just drive 1 and 1/2 hrs to Ft Benning?

Sometimes but not always. I fly the A350 and we never taxi out on one. In, yes. The airlines prefer to save gas and that’s one way of doing it.

Some aren’t, some are. I could start 2 engines at a time on the 747 using the APU. It was better than many small bizjet engines. Couldn’t use it for thrust obviously but it kicked arse!
Give this incident a few days or a week and more details will likely come out. I’ll be on off days and typically leave all things “work” at work but if I hear something I’ll try to respond.

Why can’t airports have one gate designated as an emergency gate? In this scenario, deplane there and sort it out, so not to disrupt the next plane assignment at the original gate.

I was flying American, first mistake. As for flying to Atlanta, it’s a very long story that entails coordinating with my wife as she was coming from north of Bham, last minute changes, flights to Atlanta being fully booked, and the fact American would not be able to get me to Atlanta until the next day, which would be too late to attend my son’s graduation which was held at 9:00 AM.

Its the way the contracts are written. Otherwise the staffing issue becomes worse. Imagine the hours "lost" if the timer started at any other point. I am not saying I agree with it but discussion the reasoning.
They also do not get workers comp if they injure their back lifting a soy boy's bag into the overhead.

I am a capitalist to the core, but the idea we bailed out all these air travel companies yet the prices go up while the service craters has beyond pissed me off. If companies take government money, people need to start being held criminally responsible.

I fly Delta for work because in my experience they've been the best, but I certainly wouldn't shite on anyone for having preferences.

My ATL to BHAM Delta flight last week didn’t have A/C. fricking brutal, I felt bad for the ladies working it, guess they had been on it all day.

Usually keep one engine on if aircraft has already landed and is waiting for a gate to come available. If waiting to depart, ATC will usually move you off the main taxiway and you shut both off and use APU. It takes some time to get engines started.

A few months ago I had a connecting flight on southwest in Orlando. We got on the plane and this ungodly thunderstorm rolled in. It was raining so hard I couldn’t see the plane parked next to us at the gate. It was an evening flight, and much to my surprise they actually let us off the plane to go get food. We were delayed about two hours. I was really shocked. Got home late, but at least wasn’t hungry.
