re: Solar Panels - Yay or Nay

I've been toying with the idea of buying a solar-powered "generator"...it is actually just a big battery that allows for solar panel inputs. It can also be charged with regular/car power.
Would be nice for camping, etc. in addition to the occasional power outage.

I don’t really know shite about them except that I have one friend who has them and his latest Entergy bill was like $50

Not a scam, but don’t see how it’s possible to recoup the cost. You prob won’t live in your house long enough to do so and they don’t raise the property value to a buyer.
Last I heard $100/panel to remove for a new roof and your trusting the Mexican guy to put them back on right.

We bought a house that had them installed previously and our electric bill is less than $100 a month. Our neighbors are always over $300. I was not a believer before but I can't deny the savings on my bill.

I got a decent price on my gutter guards. Got tired of cleaning rose damn things out. Plus one part of my house is three stories off the ground. I’m not getting on a ladder to clean those damn things out.

Why are people forced to put them on the roof? If I have a giant yard, why can I not have them in a non-trafficked area? You see the big solar farms where they are all ground supported. Can I have that at my home too? Why would I want holes in my new roof?

The scam is that you need 7-10KW worth of panels in Louisiana to reduce your bill by half; maybe more if your house is bigger than 2500sqft.
They want to lease it to you (vs you owning it outright) because they get all the government tax incentives and future asset depreciation. A ROI on a leased system is around 2 years in the right state.

Putting them on pole mounted passive trackers is a much better option than your roof. You can increase output by up to 40%.

Solar Panels - Yay or Nay
it all depends on your individual situation.
1) How long you plan to stay n the house
2) age of roof. if older roof, you have higher chance to need to pull off the panels to replace room (this will add to the payback time)
3) gas/electric house? all electric?
4) trees around the house that have potential to block light exposure.
5) trees/dirt feilds/construction that could add to dust/pollen that coats the panels reducing exposure
6) hours of sun per day
7) quality of panels. most panel effeciency will drop between 0.5 % and 3% per year. at 0.5% loss in 20 years they will produce at max 90% of original output.
8) are you getting a tax break? yes. then years of payback will decrease, no the full term payback
say you buy a 6kW system for $20,000 (no tax break) and save $150/mo. without factoring in efficiency loos over time, you have an 11+ year payback. (on a 20-25 year lifespan)
a $20k invstment for 11 years at 4% would be worth $30k,......

Back when Obama was paying you back for the majority of them or wanting to, yes.
I wouldn’t pay full price for them.

quote:Yes at the end of the solar payback period you would have been better off investing the $20k, but if you continue playing it out to 20 years you come out better with solar.
a $20k invstment for 11 years at 4% would be worth $30k,......
$20k invested at 4% compounded monthly comes out to:
$31k after 11 years
$44k after 20 years
$20k in solar panels and investing the $150 saved per month at 4% compounded monthly comes out to:
$25k after 11 years
$55k after 20 years
Of course that assumes a lot of things, mainly stable returns on investment, stable energy prices, and minimal equipment maintenance.

Massive scam
Doesn’t save you all that much money
You’re on the hook for tens of thousands of dollars
Don’t try selling your home if you still owe money on them. Otherwise you’re gonna have to pay them off, hardy any buyer out there is willing to assume a separate loan on solar
Also, it adds zero value to your home when it comes to selling. No buyer is going to want to pay 10-20k over market value for a home with solar, when they can get one without

They aren’t a scam.
Whether they’re worth it or not depends on you and your property. There’s a lot of variables. What are you looking to do? Save money? Off grid capable with battery? Etc?
ETA lots of people making blanket statements in here as usual who have zero fricking clue what they’re talking about.

I'm happy to answer any legitimate questions about residential solar. I've financed and continue to monitor portfolios with hundreds of thousands of US resi systems.
