I'm one of those. I gave Louisiana all the chance I could, but let's all be honest... It's not a state meant for medium to high achievers.
Sounds like somebody needs a big cup of gumbo!
Good for you man, LA is a wonderful place to be from and visit. And after your visit return to the real world.

About 178,000 residents, or 56% of the net loss, moved to Texas.
I am in that number.
I tried finding a job with my degree in Baton Rouge after I graduated college. And I found one… $15 an hour. Stayed there 3 years with no signs of career advancement.
Moved to Texas and doubled my pay, salaried position, unlimited PTO. I’ve since doubled it again just from switching companies. Now making six figures with the same degree. I don’t think I could find a similar role in Baton Rouge.

My kid can’t wait to get out this state after she is done at LSU.

A study was needed to reach this conclusion?

I'm many cases, Louisiana doesn't pay shite compared to it's neighbors for the same job.
I'm not staying. Just need to figure out where to go.

I have 2 or so years until I can "retire" and begin a second career. I am out of this crime infested, hurricane magnet to begin a new career. 2 oldest kids hopefully go elsewhere for college in 2 years. Sadly, there is little hope left here, not trying to be negative but our entire state economy is based on a commodity that is under attack from leftists.

I left for grad school in Texas after graduating from LSU. I had intentions of returning to Louisiana after finishing my masters, but after 2 years in Texas, my decision quickly changed. I may not stay in Texas forever, but if I voluntarily move anywhere else it'll likely be Florida for retirement.

quote:well, there are plenty of these. just not for the average college grad.
And then we need some pathways to a successful career for those people in Louisiana.

Education and infrastructure are the big ticket problems. Louisiana doesn't invest in itself.
We invest plenty. We waste a ton pretending that "investment" will make a difference in institutions like education.

My kid left the state to go to college and never looked back. She stayed in Texas and makes more money than her friends in the same field that stayed in Louisiana and has lots of options. She won't be coming back except to visit us....until we retire and move closer to her.

Louisiana is a shithole. I left for South Carolina and don't regret it. South Carolina is what I imagine Louisiana could have been with marginally competent leadership. Food, on the other hand, will never be beat.

Not sure how to turn this tide.
Stop sending every kid to freaking college. No reason for a ton of public universities to exist.

No way to turn the tide.
There is no reason for most professionals to stay in Louisiana unless Mommy and Daddy give them a business or support them. Nurses that work in Louisiana should look across the border because they are getting robbed and developing a lazy and lackluster skillset in Louisiana as compared to those who went to Houston/Dallas/San Antonio/Austin etc.
Most people I've seen stay in Louisiana did so primarily due to child care (mommy and daddy support system) or they chose to work at the plants.
Either way Louisiana TOPS program was a success huh??? LOL

As a younger man, in the 80's and 90s', I wanted to believe New Orleans was something worthwhile. By the 00's I had to admit it was only going to continue to get worse. Left the state and never looked back. Now I just laugh at the people in denial.

This topic comes up often. We all know the problems and we have witnessed it first hand.
What we really need is a way to change this.
How do we attract Fortune 1000 companies to locate here in Louisiana ?
Let's identify what needs to be changed and lets make those changes.

I'm begging my kids to go to school out of state, or at least out of South Louisiana, and I imagine there is a good chance that would lead them to live out of state when it comes time to settle down. I'll be moving towards them as retirement age nears. Louisiana is run like shite and that's not changing anytime soon. My book of business doesn't pick up and travel or we would all be out of state already.
