Nintendo has finally provided the confirmation fans have been waiting for ever since the announcement of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - dungeons are back, baby!

"The four Divine Beasts were the dungeons in the last game, and they shared similar designs," art director Satoru Takizawa says in an official Nintendo interview(opens in new tab). "This time, the dungeons are huge and each carry their own regional look and feel, just like traditional The Legend of Zelda games. We think they will provide a satisfying challenge for players. They were certainly a challenge to develop!"

Dungeons have been a core part of nearly every mainline Zelda game, and for all of Breath of the Wild's excellence, the limited scope, variety, and number of its Divine Beasts was a disappointment for old-school fans like me. I loved the sandbox freedom of Breath of the Wild's open world, but sometimes I want to spend a few hours taking on some challenging puzzles and combat encounters, you know?

Nintendo has made some efforts to combine the two styles of play, too. Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi says that "there is a dungeon that connects directly from Hyrule's surface. If you dive from the sky straight into the dungeon, you'll trigger an event. We think this will be a new experience that wasn't possible in the previous game."

Technical director Takuhiro Dohta also notes that the dungeons are "unique to their respective environments, so we think you’ll be able to enjoy the wide variety of regional characteristics." Massive dungeons built in ways that make sense for and interact with the regions they're in? Here I thought I couldn't be any more excited for Tears of the Kingdom.

Man everything that they release makes me want to play this game more and more. I just can’t see myself buying a system for me to only play 1 or 2 games.

Finally…

I can shut up about it.

Was my only REAL complaint.

Maybe they never intended for them to be in BOTW for some development reason and shelved it for phase 2.

They just addressed my biggest critique of botw.

Starting to feel a little hyped about this now.

frick yes. My daughter and I are so hyped for this weekend. She put over 800 hours into BOTW so she’s super excited for this one. Our preorders can’t come soon enough.

I don't know much about the technical terms of gaming but were the shrines not considered dungeons?

I’d be playing this right now if not for this stupid “having to work so I have money to pay my bills” bullshite. I’ll start it up when I get off.

I was one of the bigger skeptics.

Still don’t like the breaking weapons but the fuse helps a lot. I’m having a great time with the puzzles.

Think I’m about to go into my first dungeon.

Is this game what’s made out to be? I don’t doubt they pulled it off with but mostly reused assets and from what I’ve told the dungeons aren’t truly Zelda dungeons just redesigned divine beast that are a bit bigger after the first. I mean even if it’s breath of the wild just again I’d get to it eventually but I wanna get some opinions not from sponsored YouTubers or game journosz I could pick it up today and have till FF16 on the 22nd for it

Just broke down and bought a Switch. Should I play BOTW or Skyward Sword first? Or just jump right into Tears of the Kingdom blind?

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this game.

Side quests are so much better.

I needed to find a specific horse. I wasn’t sneaky enough ir have enough stamina. So I went and got the sneak suit. But if I didn’t want to pay a million bucks I needed to make some soup for a sick lady. I had to find milk so I went to Hateno for it. Then I took the milk back and made the soup. Then I bought the sneak suit. Then I got the horse.

Had my copy since release but was working through another game. Now committed to this.

Runakit Shrine--loved the eventual solution I came up with, but what the hell is the "right" way? I had nothing to start with and eventually tightrope-walked my way up the rail to the second platform where I eventually found the right construction/tech combinations to get up to the ball in a more "proper" fashion.

And in general are the puzzle shrines all gonna be this headscratching? I was in this one for a good hour, and a lot of it was dealing with Ultrahand controls. Fun as hell but would definitely become tedious if they all play like that.

Holy frick I just looked it up. I could've used the parasail to get over to the ball from the outset. I'm a huge dummy. Here I am placing constructs halfway up the rails, dropping them and letting them roll down, and then hopping on board and using Recall on them to reverse them back up the rails.

I started playing last week and I’ve been hooked. The abilities are better than breath of the wild and the zonai devices are very satisfying when you get them right.

I started the wind temple but left to hunt some shrines. I invested early in stamina thinking it was necessary to explore but I’d rather have the hearts at this point.

Man the cut scene that plays every time a Blood Moon happens is very annoying. I get playing it for the first BM so a new player is aware of what it means, but man so annoying seeing that BM come and just having to stop whatever you are doing to prepare to skip the cutscene lol.

I gotta question I’ll try to keep it non spoilery…

I just finished the last Tear memory. Super cool how this story is shaping up and it’s epic how we got the master sword back. I was just checking my adventure log and looks like I’m missing some memories.

Will those come with time in completing the game? I’m missing 1, 11, 14, and 16 now. Hopefully I didn’t miss something important that would have made the last memory even better.

Life got vv busy and I took a break. I revisited and started a new game. I am doing more side quests.

Any suggestions on getting the scale off the dragon for the one quest? Can you land right on the dragon snake to get the one thing for that goddess statue?

I rode one into the chasm.
