Book for a High School Grad

My 18 year old son enjoys reading, its a shocker. I was thinking of a book for his high school graduation as a little token gift. He's going away to college.
I'd like something about life lessons or a book about traveling. I don't necessarily want a how-to or instructional book. I'd rather a story that he would enjoy reading. Some titles I thought of were On the Road or Into the Wild.
FYI, he loves World War 2 books and general history.
Anyone have thoughts? Thanks.

Not about life lessons or traveling but Winds of War by Herman Wouk is a fantastic WWII book
And the continuation, War and Remembrance, is just as good.

The Hobbit. Fantasy traveling but still a great journey. He'll probably want to read the trilogy after that.

Seriously...my book would be perfect for an 18 year old male going off to college.
Its a true story...and it has a lot of life lessons.
Plus, I managed to make parts of it funny... so its not all child rape and murder.

I actually agree with that. And have an autographed copy.

For the WWII books have him read Winds of War first then War and Rembrance.
For the travel books, have him read some of the Bill Bryson books such as Neither Here Nor There and Notes From a Small Island.

I got a copy of the poem Desiderata when I graduated, and still enjoy it today.

Discipline is Destiny - Holliday
I would give $100,000 today to have read or listened to this when I was 17, provided that I took from it then as much as I did recently when hearing it. I've listened to it 4 or 5 times these last few months.

My dad gave my son Make Your Bed when he was a senior.
He finally read it five years later and loved it.

Endurance by Alfred Lansing on Ernest Shackleton and his crew’s epic survival of their failed journey across Antarctica. Great book.

My first pick would be The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.
My second pick would be Illusions by Richard Bach.
My third pick would be Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, by Robert Pirsig.
Any one of those three would be a good life lessons book for a recent graduate.

I like all of the non-fiction suggestions, and would also add a book about money.
Something very easy to understand but that also covers several areas.

I recently read Modern Times by Paul Johnson. It’s a great overview of the 20th century with interesting perspectives.

On the Road is an excellent idea if he hasn't read it.
Maybe something like the collected short stories of Ernest Hemingway would appeal to him. They are set in lots of different places from Europe to Africa to America. Maybe let him read one or two like "A Clean Well Lighted Place" and "Big Two Hearted River" first to see if Hemingway's writing appeals to his taste.
For WWII, if he hasn't read them yet, With the Old Breed by Sledge and Helmet for my Pillow by Leckie are both really great reads.
