Fund raising for high school sports?

I really wish they would just put a price on playing the sport…instead of having my son submit emails of people to hit up for money. It’s a private school and this isn’t for playoffs or summer tournaments…the regular school sport.
If baseball costs an extra $450 or football cost $400 per kid to get the proper equipment then so be it. Make it known at tryouts and if some kids need help raising it…help them individually.
My son needs 20 ‘units’ for a sport…but units are just how many people that donated, whether that be $20 or $100. Doesn’t make any sense.
End of rant.

I mean…… you could just ask the coach “hey coach, can I give you $500 to leave me tf alone this season?”

They want the emails to use beyond the sports and seek fund raising perpetually from that email list.

You can just pay the fundraiser amount yourself and then it's the same exact thing as putting a price on playing the sport, no?

As a coach - I can tell you the intent is often to get the players to put some equity into the team.
So many these days are spoiled rotten because mommy and daddy will write the thousand dollar check for the latest gear, travel team, recruiting service, etc.
It’s a shame that rather than have their kid do some work to support the team, the parents just bitch at the coach and write another check.

It's so the white privilege kids can sell more to make up for the 0 that the scholarship players will sell.

Maybe if your son wasn't the best kicker in the state you wouldn't haven to worry about this. Sounds like you should be thankful.

I ordered like $80 "worth" of popcorn a few weeks ago. I was expecting a truckload. It was 8 bags about the size of a bag of smart pop.

We used to do car washes, contests, or some sort of promotion for funds.
Kids today just hold their hand out and ask for free money. I wouldn’t allow my kid to do that.

My kids go to a private school. One pays about $600 to play football. The other pays about $800 to play Soccer. Both still have fund raisers. You have to pay for the scholarships for "ringers" somehow, I guess.

At least it is your kid asking for the money instead of mom and dad posting a calendar on Facebook and asking you to donate the amount of money for what day of the month you pick.

We found in our scouting groups that parents would rather just pay the actual cost than deal with selling shiat. And as a person that had to administrate the selling of shiat... I welcome it.
If people can't afford it, they can sell shiat.
If they'd rather pay full price, we take all forms of payment.
It's so misleading to tell people it only costs "$xxx dollars," but constantly hit them up for more as time passes.

My daughter does PUBLIC high school cheer. We just got the final fee bills for the upcoming year.
Returning cheerleaders pay $1,800 over five months (May - Sept). New cheerleaders pay close to $2,800 over same five months (difference in cost is uniforms... if a returning cheerleader has to buy additional uniform pieces, they pay additional on top of the $1,800).
Then, Oct - Dec we pay for nationals if we make it (we will make it... everyone makes it lol). They told us to budget $1,000 per cheerleader and $700 per chaperone (each cheerleader must bring a chaperone). Cost will be finalized later in the year.
We do a number of fundraisers. Any fundrasier you do, the cheerleader gets credited for the amount the school gets. So if you sell ads, car wash tickets, candy, whatever, the profit goes directly to that cheerleader's account. Team fundraisers such as the summer camp and fall cheer clinic they put on for young kids, the profit is split among all the cheerleaders who work those events.
Basically for each payment that is due, you can use whatever how much money is in the account that hasn't been used yet, to go towards that payment.
This seems like a decent system for us.

During the summer, school sport(s) should host:
1. Skeet Shoot
2. Golf Tournament
There are your funds.

When I was playing sports in school it was always either these coupon card things or selling Coke products.
They would have us go door to door selling those stupid cards, which I hated doing.

In our case, we provided 20 friends’ emails but told them up front to ignore the emails, we just paid the amount expected up front to the team fund. I hade 14 years worth of funding payments, some overlapped, where sons played baseball at the HS and MS level.
I found out after a relative became an assistant coach that easily 25% of the players never paid a dime. Others’ donations and fundraisers essentially covered those non-payers.
