Jay’s Moves Look Much Better Now?

Ack can go again tomorrow, right? Others, too?

It still doesn't make sense that Cooper faced more hitters than Ack.
There is no defending how the 8th was handled, Hurd pitching the best 5 outs of his life bailed us out.

Managing a pitching staff, especially a bull pen, has to be a nightmare for a coach if you don't have the 1998 Yankees.
Sometimes, you 'waste' an arm for whatever reason.
Situational.
The outcome tonight makes Jay look like he knew what he was doing.
Like Earl Weaver said, a 3 run homer in the 8th always helps.
Had we lost, tar and feathers.

Right and he fricked up the situation by having Ack face less lefties than Cooper.

The only part of this I disagree with is the notion that Johnson got lucky with Hurd. He pitched well midweek and was supposed to be this good, but hasn’t been able to find control of his pitches. It’s the best he’s pitched in an SEC game, but far from the best he’s pitched in his life. It’s not even his best outing this season. That would be the Texas game. He and Wes Johnson obviously saw something on Tuesday that gave them confidence they could rely on him this weekend. That’s not luck.

What a fantastic win that was. I couldn't be more proud of the guys for fighting back, and of Coleman, Money and Hurd for their performances.
The pitching decisions in the 8th, however, were just mind boggling. As soon as he took Ack out after one batter, I said "what happens if Guidry doesn't have it today". That is a lot to put on a freshman, when you didn't absolutely have to go to him that early. But then to only let him face two batters, to go to a guy who has struggled all year, had me in disbelief.
Then he pinch runs in the bottom of the inning, replacing a catcher with a catcher, and the bunt that followed saw the runner get thrown out on a play where someone like Stevenson might have been safe. After all of that, the Tigers prevailed, and that's what counts. I have a lot of questions for what coach was doing in the 8th.

That was my call, but I was sitting behind home plate.

I'm not sure if you're telling me a joke, or that you agree with me while having sat behind home plate.

No, the decisions in the 8th were pretty bad regardless of result

A good outcome doesn't make a bad decision into a good one.

Nah, all these dudes here were in the dugout and know exactly what we had and why those decisions were made. These guys know baseball and understand there are no nuances at all.
They all say they were bad decisions, and of course we lost so they are right.
Fire Jay, Hire Rantards.

We gave up one run with a two run lead. I think that defends itself pretty well. You, I, and nobody else knows how the game unfolds IF we did what you want.
People on here bitch that JJ doesnt go for the sweep. He still has pitchers left for today...

Bingo. It just wasn't done the way they wanted it done.
They have absolutely no clue what the situation was with each of these pitchers.

It's literally funny. I kid you not.

It worked out well, that was not done by intention.
Guidry was supposed to get the last 5 outs.
No one's arm got really got taxed so I would assume everyone is good to go tomorrow if needed except Skenes, Herring,Floyd and Coleman. Which is where we were last weekend on Sunday.
Let's go fly a W today

Fortunately, we have Skenes as our Friday starter...after that, there's a huge dropoff.
Floyd has the stuff but can't seem to find consistency from week to week. Little is not the definitive arm that I thought he would be, at least he hasn't shown it from week to week. Hurd was pretty good last night but his outings have been pretty disappointing up till now.
I see promise in Coleman, Herring, Ackenhausen & Edwards. Still holding my breath on Riley Cooper and now, Guidry.
Dutton, Collins & sometimes, Money are good for a few innings.
Yes, we're still #1 in the country and still winning, but it seems that most every week we face pitchers who are far superior to our staff. It's our bats that we have come to rely on to reach the success we have enjoyed thus far.

We won, so coach did a good job.
If we sweep, he did a great job.
No coach is going to make the right decision every time. Besides, we can’t truly know if any of the decisions are bad because we will never know the result of going the other way. We don’t play this thing in a laboratory.
Enjoy the win and having the #1 team in America.

I mean, it worked out but that was bizarre bringing in a guy to face one batter. It didn’t help that the next guy almost blew the game. But, this team can smash the ball so all’s well that ends well.

quote:WTF do you guys come from? It worked out well and it absoluty was intentional. Did it go exactly according to his plan? No. Did every move he make work out exactly as he intended? Obviously not. But he had a result he was trying to achieve and he made adjustments along the way. It seems to me he got was he was looking for.

I'm not saying every move he made was 3D chess. Maybe pulling Ack while he was still confident and wanting more was important goal. Maybe he needed to throw something to Milazzo in that moment. Maybe he's trying to build a team that adapts to whatever he asks them to do with confidence. Maybe he wanted to give everyone in the pen to have just enough throws to earn more playing time today. There are lots of goals to accomplish along with winning every game.
Dude built the #1 team in his second year at a program that was heading in the wrong direction when he took over. I'm not saying he's perfect, but we're lucky that he has more confidence in himself, his coaching staff, and his roster than the baseball experts here on tRant.
ETA: And although he's trying to win every game, there's no doubt that building this team for Omaha goes into every decision he makes as well.
