U.S. manufacturing growth outpaces the rest of the world

American manufacturing growth started outpacing the rest of the world's growth at the end of last year — for the first time in recent memory.
The big picture: The reasons for the surprising flip-flop are primarily energy and COVID-related, according to the Atlantic Council GeoEconomics Center.
Production of renewable energy equipment saw a big uptick in the U.S. last year, and oil exports soared, too.
Also: Domestic production of medical equipment like masks, gloves and pharmaceuticals grew.
Meanwhile, China’s manufacturing growth was muted because of its zero-COVID policies, while the eurozone’s production has been impacted by higher energy prices.
“While the rest of the world grew a little, the US surged,” the Atlantic Council wrote.
Details: The chart shows the difference between the U.S. and the world's (excluding the U.S.) industrial production year-over-year percent change. The Atlantic Council calculations are based on data from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.

The role of shortening supply chains can't be overlooked. A renissance of domestic and general North American industrial growth should happen over the next 20 years.

I’ve been shocked at how much China is destroying itself over Covid, moreso than here. Other nations went so far overboard with Covid policy it really could help us long term

Can't wait for the "checkbox lady" to high step about this in a WH press conference.

Mexico and India will be the biggest benefactors of the next 20 years.
Mexico has extremely favorably demographics right now.
India's rise will do to China what South Korea and China did to Japan.
I don't foresee China passing the United States.

It’s all a reactionary cycle. I work for a large manufacturer. We have been “right sizing” manufacturing locations back to the U.S., or creating dual manufacturing hubs for the last couple of years, and it will only continue.

I want to believe that, and hope companies have learned a lesson about having greater control over their supply chain, BUT I know that any lesson learned will be short-lived.
Most companies may on-shore stuff in the near term, but in 3-5 years, they'll find a reason to start buying a lesser quality product from somewhere else just to save a few points of margin.

Such lazy journalism. How about do some research and tell us the last time instead of going off your 24yr old memory.

The question is where they'd find that margin; it certainly won't be available from traditional sources-- that cheap labor pool isn't there.

The link literally has a graph that shows the data for the past 10 years. They did the research all you had to do was click the link.

Of course it is.
This way the admin can brag about all of this "new growth" and it's just a bunch of fricking solar panels made from overseas components but "assembled in the USA".
It's smoke and mirrors and if it weren't for the subsidies and forcing utilities to buy the solar power it wouldn't even be a viable industry.
Keep in mind these same utilities have to keep the infrastructure (coal, nuclear, NG, etc.) operable and online for a cloudy day and when the sun isn't out at night.
