Then you have them yelling at umpires when they have no clue what the hell they are talking about,

I know of some kids that played over 100 events, but most of em were 7 and 8 year old coach pitch when they played every damn weekend.

In the 80’s most dads were at every practice and game. Usually drinking beer right out in the open. It was their getaway also, I guess.

I always was baffled at TV shows or movies where the kid comes home from the game and parents are both just sitting in living room and ask him how his game was.
I always thought that was because most shows/movies are written by flaming homos in Hollywood who have no idea what having kids is like, but I guess there is some truth to it?

Travel ball coaches and parents are the freaking worst... thank God mine is out of it and now in HS ball.

Mine try’s out in a couple months. I am not unhappy. He will still want to play the summer circuit but that will be laid back
Posted on 3/2/23 at 4:10 pm to Lsudx256
Yeah. It seems there is a strategy now for parent to spend money to make their kids good. I hope your kid is a natural athlete and he knocks the shite out of the ball without the garb. My son never made it that far. I played catch with him one day and he took a ball to the face twice. That was it even though I told him that is why he had the glove.
Posted on 3/2/23 at 4:24 pm to tigerfoot
We had so many kids try out for Rec coach pitch here that they created a waiting list. Not all kids got in the league. My son is a decent left handed hitter and someone already said something to me about him trying out for the Competitive Team later this Spring. If they expect us to travel every weekend to baseball tourneys they are gonna be disappointed.

quote:Well, then the fam can't load up and travel 3 weekends a month from Texas-LA-MS-AL-FL. Caravan together like a convey with Suburban's and Tahoe's loaded to the roof with tents/coolers/chairs/gear for camping at the ballpark all day & night every Saturday & Sunday. They can't drop at minimum a grand a month on gas/eating our every meal/hotel's if they're playing local rec league baseball.
You travel ballers need to bring your kids back to LL. It is possible to assemble and maintain a team through the age groups.

Our rec leagues here are a disgrace. Terrible spring loaded pitching machine, field director setting them up at random distances which have to be constantly moved and adjusted, and shitty facilities. You get 6-8 weeks of baseball of you're lucky to avoid the rain.
My son wanted more so the only option is travel ball. We played zero tournaments in the fall and we only have 6 scheduled from now until the end of May. So its not that terrible.

You sound like you’re a little jealous tbh
What a strange thing to make fun of

Because politics and drama don’t exist there, of all places
It’s def baseball season though. Can’t not have an OT thread without posters who don’t have kids poking fun at kids playing in a different league than Little League anymore
My kid plays. He plays AA. He’s not great. He’s ok and getting better but he’s having a lot more fun than he would than what our local LL offers.

It’s almost all on the parents
Parents love youth baseball. Their kids don’t have to be the best athlete’s to be good at this age. Parents are paying for their kids to play year around. Some are paying $50 to $150 a week for private coaching.
Youth baseball is pretty big in my town and has been since the 50’s. Population of about 10,000 and have been to the Little League World Series twice. Last year they were 1 game away from going to the World Series. The kid that wanted to be a chicken nugget taste tester is from here(He’ll play D1 football).
I see parents that are living through their kids in every sport. When they get older a lot of parents don’t care if they play, because they are just as burnt out as their kids. Even though we have a good youth baseball program High School football is the only sport that matters to most people. That $50 to $150 parents are now spending on football.
A good thing about having a good youth baseball program is that it makes kids more competitive in football.

Baseball used to be for the cooler kids
Was with you until this sentence. Why on earth should baseball be for “cooler” kids and not just whoever wants to play? Why are you—an adult—assessing the “coolness” of ten year olds?

Never seen this IRL, I bet it’s a trip.
You pay a few bucks for an app that gets an announcer person to record annoucements of each player's name ... i.e. "Now batting... Brayden Jaxxxson". Then a few seconds of a song plays. App connects via bluetooth to speaker.

I said that to say this: I’m not sure if travel ball led to the collapse of rec ball or if the shitty rec departments led to the emergence of travel ball, but I don’t blame people one bit for trying to find a better place and a better organization to play for
Here's how it happens with us.
4 and 5 and 6 year olds... we hold team drafts. Parents and coaches get pissy because they don't want to draft, they want to either stack a team, or, they want to just gather 10-12 kids together and that's their team. But we make them split up all the A/B/C kids onto all the teams.
At 7 years old, they decide to go play travel because... they don't have to draft.
At some point during that season, some of the parents start to not like some of the other parents, so for the next 2-3 years, people are leaving, joining, starting new teams, etc.
Then by about age 11, the really good players get together with really good coaches and start playing in elite tournaments. The rest of the kids drop out of baseball or go back to rec for a few years, cause everyone is burned out by 60 games a summer.
Now, the more people who leave rec for travel, it causes the rec league to drop further, which causes more kids to leave for travel, etc. It's become a feedback loop.

Pretty accurate assessment
And I am at a tournament now. Listening to shitty rap music
Just watched my sons team play an inning of defense that you couldn’t find worse baseball anywhere on the planet.
Gave up 6 on 1 hit.
I just put it here to vent

Absolutely. It's amazing how the sports merchandise world keeps coming up with stuff to "make you better".
