LOL. Sorry your kid is AA.

I’m curious… since you seem to know so much about it, what’s YOUR experience been like? Did you coach? Play? How many years? Where?

I've played / coached / umpired / managed leagues since I was 5 year old... so almost 40 years, in two different states (LA and TX). Both baseball and softball.

I have plenty of friends who have kids who are involved in all levels.

Very few can handle the wicked curve balls when they move up from T-ball...

So you’ve had your hands in this shite for 40 years, and still can’t do it right?

What are your main complaints about it?

Some kids just like to play sports and don't need to play 60 baseball games in the spring season alone

I truly believe that kids - especially age 10 and younger - need to play as many different sports / activities as they can.

When you are playing a 60 game spring/summer season and a 20 game fall season, you can't do that.

Now 11 years old and up? By that time many of them want to focus on one sport.

But the vast majority of athletes at my high school in the 90s played multiple HS sports. Many played football and baseball. Or football and track/field.

Kids baseball in South Louisiana is a business that cares about making money, not making kids better.

This is so true. The local travel organizations are expanding and filling out teams (i.e. cashing checks) for a rec league.

I will support my kid and let him play the sports he likes, but i can't fricking stand how baseball is run in Baton Rouge and in South LA in general.

This is the one thing I hate the most about travel ball and some rec leagues. And it seems it's always the Karen moms who insist on doing this.

I graduated early 2010s and we didn’t have one kid who played football, basketball, and baseball. Pretty much everyone was a one sport athlete expect for football players who ran track. Maybe 3 or 4 football players on the varsity baseball team.

LOL. I can't stop white flight / self-segregation.

When we played rec ball as kids, if you had 12 kids on a team, 3 or 4 of them had dads that would coach, one or two had moms that would pick up and drop off kids, 1 or 2 would pay for the nicer uniforms and for team drinks after the games, and the other 4 had parents with crazy work schedules or other sitautions or just did not give a shite and we never saw them.

Now... those 8 kids with the parents who care and help are all playing AA travel ball, and the 4 kids with the parents who don't give a shite or can't give a shite are what is left in rec.

So not only is the competiton bad, no one steps up to coach these kids. Most of our 7-10 year old team coaches are old dudes with no attachment to anyone on the team, or one parent steps up to coach and misses half the games and 3/4ths the practices.

It sucks for those kids left behind, and it completely doesn't have to be that way.

But that's America, 2023.

So the changeover happened between mid 90s and 2010.

It takes a village. My son's coach corrects them all the time. Kids push limits. It's what they do. The coach corrects that at practice and the games. I reinforce on the ride home.
I agree with this 100%. The reason I want my kids involved in extra curricular activities, including sports is to have adults in the community have a vested interest and a personal relationship with my kids. I can not be everywhere, and I cant do everything for my kid. My kid must learn that eyes are on them from all over the place, and they must respect the correction given to them.

And she forgets to turn on the damn thing until a pitch is being delivered. It is nonsense. I would love to set fire to every boom box at the park.

That’s crazy to me. In the 80’s most dads were at every practice and game. Usually drinking beer right out in the open. It was their getaway also, I guess.

couldn't agree more.
Then you have them yelling at umpires when they have no clue what the hell they are talking about, all to try to make an excuse why their kid got out or why their team loss.

I agree with the whole premise of your point, but I’d like to point out that our team still does this

I’ll say this, the recreation department where I’m at has just about completely fallen apart. There’s no funding, so it’s one guy running everything for football, baseball, basketball, soccer, etc, with TWO workers for all of the fields (all grass, no turf) and the rest of the park.. so the facilities look and play like shite year round.

I said that to say this: I’m not sure if travel ball led to the collapse of rec ball or if the shitty rec departments led to the emergence of travel ball, but I don’t blame people one bit for trying to find a better place and a better organization to play for

My kids played "travel" ball from 9-11. We had a rule, one overnight type tournament a year and 9 others within an hour drive. They loved it. Neither played HS ball, but they learned a lot about team, competition, humility, disappointment, and victory in the process.

Interesting stats from USSSA on some familiar names:

Paul Skenes from 8,9, 10 year old AAA ball
Baseball

Tournaments Played: 14
Record : 23-31-2
1st Place : 1
2nd Place : 2
3rd Place : 3
4th Place : 3
Not in Top 4 : 5

Dylan Crews - 10 and 11 AAA, 12, 13, 14 Major
Baseball

Position : Outfield,Catcher
Tournament Record
Tournaments Played : 66
Record : 170-101-4
1st Place : 19
2nd Place : 11
3rd Place : 17
4th Place : N/A
Not in Top 4 : 19

Gavin Dugas - 10 and 11 AA; 11 AAA, 12 Major, 13 and 14 AA

Tournaments Played : 43
Record : 57-83-5
1st Place : 6
2nd Place : 5
3rd Place : 6
4th Place : N/A
Not in Top 4 : 26

That’s a reasonable amount of games. Basically what we do. I don’t even think we will play in 10 tournaments this year. And most of our games are 10-15 min from the house so it works out
