It amazes me the number of drivers that tailgate people pulling a load

I had to move an excavator from one site to another yesterday. It was chained down well but I still can't stand people that drive as if the load behind me doesn't exist. Every time I tow something I am shocked at the number of people that tailgate me or cut me off and stop as if I can stop on a dime with the weight behind me. Electric brakes help but pulling something that heavy still builds up a lot of momentum once you get up to speed.
I had someone not hook a trailer up correctly one time and it came off the ball. The only reason the trailer didn't kill someone is the gooseneck hitch was inset in the flatbed like in the picture below and the hitch floated in the box. Thankfully it happened about 2 miles from my destination so it was easy to stop and call for help. Ever since that experience years ago, I double-check everything before taking off but also don't get too close behind anyone pulling anything.
Too many people don't secure their trailer loads properly, overload trailers, can't drive one well, have PoS trailers, etc. I never get close to anyone pulling anything and switch lanes if possible. Getting somewhere maybe a few minutes faster isn't worth the risk, people.

quote:The cutting you off seems like way bigger of a risk than tailgating. I understand people are horrible jackasses that can't be trusted to hitch properly...but having said that, how often do they really come undone?

I can draft behind you and get better mpg.

It amazes me seeing some crappy little vehicle pulling two wrecked vehicles behind it on the interstate.

Better than tailgating someone while they blow a load

You don’t check your connections and straps before pulling off?

People are stupid and playing on their phones

I keep waiting for my outboard motor to go through someone’s windshield. Tailgating + texting is going to end with a stainless prop to the face.

Tailgating/following too closely is out of fricking control. I wish everyday I could drop my tailgate and have a minigun in the bed.
On two lane roads I'm going 5 over at most. fricking pass me or back off, I not fricking speeding up

Well they can’t get brake checked so they’re safe.

I think a lot of them follow so closely so if something falls off or flies off they can get paid.

Yeah, bro, hang out next to the uHaul I'm pulling on tight I-10 lanes east of Houston. Sounds like a good idea.
Or hang out four inches off my bumper while pulling a uHaul in a Ford Ranger with 94 horsepower (stick) while we're at a stoplight facing uphill.
All seems like a great idea. But you'll just get blamed, and they'll profess innocence and ignorance.
This is precisely why I drive aggressively, to get away from people I know aren't paying attention. "Right" doesn't matter when there's 5000 lbs of load being pushed into your lane for one reason or another. I'm not hanging out around your load, trust me. Not your fault, there's road conditions, wind, etc., but I'm just not going to increase my risk by hanging out near the load, because I'm taking control of my own fate.
I don't know where you transit to/from, but the inattentiveness of the drivers is precisely why I'll spend an extra 30m taking state highway 6 out of west Houston to get to DFW instead of taking I-45. That's not even people with loads, it's just the number of drivers with their seats slammed back that are on Twitter, etc.

Get out of the left lane and I won't tailgate.

If by people you mean women then idk why you’re surprised.

what does this have to do with mortgage rates or selling prices of residential real estate?

More concerned about what others do in front of my tow rig. If someone chooses to tailgate my loaded gooseneck it's their problem if they eat the azz end.

Was coming back from MS this afternoon, saw to bikes in front of me. Got behind them and gave them space, another car pulled in front of me and tailgated them.

How many paint chips and windshield cracks you rack up with all the rocks and shite from your trailer deck? Lazy arse mother fkrs do not have to worry about me tailgating.

I've noticed that young female drivers have a tendency to get right up on the bumper of the vehicle in front of them for no reason at all. They have zero concept of the dangers involved.

I’m sorry that happened to you.
