The fact that these numbers are even close is kinda ridiculous though.

Gun deaths are around 31k a year, and cars are around 35-40k a year.

Only in America.

They didn't "take" his gun. He gave it up in exchange for the charges being dropped. He can fight to keep the gun, as is his right, but would then have the charges brought against him.

That makes this "deal" even more ridiculous.

Do you think he didn't commit a crime?

in a place where guns are not permitted. It is illegal to possess a firearm (permitted or not) at a parade, in the FQ or anywhere where alcohol is involved. This is to prevent the unintentional discharge of weapon due to the crowd and intoxication of the person carrying or those around that person. The act of existing along with the gun is what is illegal. The charges have already been dropped - as they were dropped for the other dozens of people arrested for the same thing this weekend, but that is where there is a problem. Criminals in New Orleans, are being taught the lesson that they can get away with breaking the law with little consequence. This leads to more crime and is part of the reason that New Orleans is the murder capital of the United States. Our DA, Jason Williams doesn't enforce the law and many citizens think that they can get away with murder - often times this is the case. I don't believe Malik had any nefarious intent and was planning on doing anything other than protecting himself, but he broke the law and possessed his gun in a place where he should not have been possessing it. It's pretty clear cut. I'm glad Malik won't be going to jail or be prosecuted - but I'm also sad for the police who are understaffed and trying to enforce the law but are not getting any support from the District Attorney.

No, they took it in exchange for the charges being dropped. You think that part was his idea?

LSU football player breaks the law, charges dropped. Won't be the first or the last time.

Absurd comparison. Cars are pretty much a necessity if you want to keep the economy and growth going as it is. Guns are not a necessity (and I’m pro gun within reason)

BTW. They can and do revoke peoples drivers license making it illegal for them to drive a car so your comparison is wrong on multiple levels.

Irrelevant. Keep the gun, we're charging you. Give up the gun, you're off the hook. Regardless of who came up with that deal, he didn't have to agree to it.

Why shouldn’t he keep his gun? If his crime is so minor as to only require civil asset forfeiture then why arrest to begin with?
This state is a disaster.

Nope... 35 or so people were arrested for illegal carrying of a concealed weapon, and 35 people had their charges refused.
No privilege was exercised. All idiots who chose to bring a weapon to a place where it is illegal were given the same treatment.

If he wanted to fight the charges I’m sure it would cost more than it’s worth to actually get it back and win a case. Attorney fees, driving to and from NOLA, etc.

Unsure of how the situation started but seems like a shitty move on NOPD part, but Malik should register for a conceal carry permit after this.

This is true, but for lots of reasons besides this case. I’m not sure why so many of you can’t comprehend this deal.

NOPD takes a gun off the streets where it shouldn’t have been to begin with, and Nabors is free to go with a lesson learned and some inconvenience.

Nobody gets hurt and nobody has their life ruined. This is one of the few times I think the city and state got it exactly right.
