Question about Cruises for both cruise fans and haters.

Disclosure: I do not like cruises.
The in-laws are addicted to cruises, and wanted to take grandkids forever on a Disney Cruise, but we put it off until the youngest was 5 years old. That was 5 years ago and they (in-laws) want to do it again.
Don't get me wrong, the kids had a blast, but I asked them if given the choice, would they rather just go to a resort... they all said they'd prefer to go to a resort.
The in-laws go on a minimum of 1 cruise per year, this year they will do three. They love it, so we'll do it... but jesus this thing is so freaking expensive, it drives me crazy thinking about it.
I don't get it. Can someone sell me on why I should prefer this to going to a resort somewhere?

You shouldn't

So you can stare at water for days with no landmarks in sight. And have tiny pools. And have you towel blown off your beach chair constantly because of the high winds on the top decks of a boat.
I'm with you, cruises compared to resorts and exploring suck.

You shouldn't. Let them take the kids on the cruise and you and the wife can stay home and relax.

F and no. My ex priced out a Disney Cruise and I had to place an emergency call to our financial coach to back her off that ledge. Even 5ish years ago, the cruise was the same cost as staying at whatever the animal lodge is and four/five days of park tickets.
I really, really do not get the attraction people have with cruises. Locked up with limited options, swimming in a pool, water slides, etc. Oh, I could also fly to a tiny island like Roatan and get a villa with a pool, the option to kayak, have a chef come cook for us, a rental to see the "sights" in town, for a third or a quarter of the price.
Tell them you'll pay for the kids, but don't go. It was probably 12k when my ex costed it out for four, and there is no *fing* way I'm being guilted into spending that because my in laws have a fascination with buffets.
I spent *less money* flying my kids to Paris, Marseille and Barcelona for over a week than that f&ing cruise would have cost.
ETA: I bought the right class of economy ticket and used Global Premier Upgrades to dump everyone into business class, and did the first four nights with Marriott points, the last week? paid for an AirBnB with another family that flew with us.

Good. The kids need to learn that their grandparents are special and it’s not always about what they (the kids) want.
They are lucky to have them.

No. Prefer whatever you want. You don’t have to like it more than going to a resort just because others do.

One thing I don’t understand is why people compare a Disney cruise to a Disney World vacation. Other than the company name and characters, they are nothing alike. One is a boat with thousands of people crammed into every inch of it and the other is a theme park with rides where you can come and go as you get sick of people. They are both incredibly expensive I guess. We took the kids to Disney recently and our friend said we should have done a Disney cruise instead as if it’s the same experience. Makes no sense to me.
If I’m spending a week somewhere it’s at a resort and not staring at the sea for days.

I’m a cruise hater myself. I must admit the Disney cruise was jam up. Way better than dealing with the park. The princess and other crap were just walking around for the kids. Food and drinks included . You could bring your own liquor. Lots of entertainment for the kids.
I’m not a Disney type dude. The cruise was a good way for me to say I did Disney with the kids without doing it. Wife and mother in law took them to the real park.
Worth the money for me.

I'm a cruiser. Either you like it or you don't imo. I like being able to visit multiple places all within a few days. I enjoy being in the middle of the ocean with nothing but blue seas as far as the eye can sea. That gives me so much peace, probably more than anything else.
That being said, it's not for everyone. I'll readily admit that.

I enjoy cruises but if the kids prefer going to the resort then just say that. Let them know the kids are old enough to voice their opinions. You don’t want to sound unthankful but you don’t want to send the entire family on a vacation no one really wants to go on. Since the kids can’t go alone with the grandparents then you get a say, IMO, whether they are paying or not. With their DVC membership this shouldn’t be an issue. If they get all pissy then it gets complicated but I can’t stand people who want to force everyone to do what they like.

So me and the fam are doing a Disney Cruise this summer. We took my daughter to Disney World in 2018 and it was like 5Kish (this included a meal plan)....I priced the same trip today and it was just as much as the cruise which was in the 10K range without the meal plan at the resort (most meals are included on the cruise).
I may not ever go back to the resort at the prices they are today....especially not when the parks are "selling out" even at some traditionally non-peak times.
Granted I may never go on another Disney Cruise after this one, but they wanted to do one so we'll do one.
Hell if it were me I'd be just as happy going to a resort in the Hill Country (TX) or Wine Country (CA)...probably for a helluva lot cheaper either way.

I mean, it's personal preference. Cruise line makes a difference.
What I like more about cruising than resorts is being in a different country every day.

Cruises are good if you are old or on a budget. Old people like the fact that they can just sit on a ship and do nothing while someone else prepares all of the food, entertainment and arrangements. Poor people like the fact that they can go to five Caribbean Islands for $499 pp including all you can eat, etc. Price out flights, resort costs and fees, restaurant bills, rental cars and other activities for Aruba, Bermuda, Bahamas, Cayman Is, Virgin Is, St. Lucia, Antigua, Grenada, Barbados, etc. and you will see why people (from a country where the majority of families bring in less than $1k a week) chose to travel, sleep and eat on the giant boat parked in the harbor.
I'm not much of a cruiser but I can see the appeal of multiple stops and minimal hassle on a discounted budget. That excludes Disney which strike me as a giant ripoff. 10 grand to go on a boat ride with Goofy and Snow White? Not happening. I'm pretty sure I could plan any dream vacation in the world for that kind of money.

This statement strikes me as manipulative. If the kids don’t want to go on the cruise, I suggest having them tell the grandparents they’d rather do a resort. Before I do that, I’d stop to take a hard look at why I asked the kids that: was it really to get a sense of what they wanted or was it because I don’t like what’s being proposed. I’d check my motive.
Depending on the family dynamics between you, your wife, and your in-laws, you may have to play along. It’s a Caribbean vacation on a moving resort—stay positive.
Other options:
—Send the kids with the grandparents and take the wife to a resort.
—Tell the in-laws you’d rather not spend your money on a cruise

Going to different places each day while only having to unpack once. Having a variety of things to do on board and on land.
But Disney... Disney is stupid, crazy expensive, and to me provides one benefit.
Character lines.
Go to the parks... and you spend 2 hours in line to take a picture a character.
But on the ship... the characters are everywhere and often there is no lines... or the lines are short.
We went on a Disney cruise years ago. My youngest was 4... and Tiana walked up to her, took her hand, and proceded to walk all around the ship with her for 25 mintes, talking and playing with her.
My kid was over the moon. That's a great experience for all of us. But it's kind of only awesome for a limited time in life.
