re: Lamar Jackson and the Ravens are $100M apart on guaranteed money

If Denver can pay a "past his prime" QB that kind of $$$, Lamar has a good argument on why he should get a sweet deal as well.
Plus, Lamar has the support of many black athletes. All have spoken out about this. They all say pay Lamar.
quote:
The loudest support came from a chorus of players from other teams, former pros, and sometimes, athletes from other sports. Buffalo Bills linebacker Von Miller told reporters that Jackson should be the highest-paid player in the league; the former Seahawks defensive back Richard Sherman criticized the Ravens’ front office for not getting a deal done; and the N.B.A. stars James Harden and Ja Morant showed their support, with Morant posting on Twitter that the Ravens needed to pay Lamar, “RIGHT NOWWW.”
Even opponents campaigned for Jackson, a 26-year-old quarterback. After Jackson had two costly turnovers in a Week 6 loss to the Giants, reporters asked New York linebacker Jihad Ward if Jackson’s interception was “dumb,” and the defender’s demeanor quickly shifted from jubilant to serious.
“Lamar is a great player,” Ward said. “All I can say is I don’t think it was dumb. All I can say is that’s my dawg, and pay that man. Pay Lamar Jackson, please.” Other Giants players joined in the chorus, yelling that the Ravens should pay Jackson.
In Week 8, after Jackson torched the Buccaneers in Tampa, Fla., for 238 yards and two touchdowns in the air and rushed for 43 yards, he spotted a fan’s sign that read “Pay ‘Em Now,” held it aloft and then autographed it.

I wouldn't pay Jackson what Murray is being paid either. If you were a GM, would you give Jackson $200 million guaranteed? A 1-4 playoff record with the AFC only being more difficult now isn't doing him any favors.
Exactly. The Ravens are one of the smarter organizations. They know large QB contracts hinder teams. Giving a large contract to a guy who hasn't even got you to the AFC championship in 4 years plus having his type of play style isn't a smart move.

Ravens are offering Lamar less guaranteed money than Kyler Murray which is ridiculous.
If the Ravens have any front office at all they will do just the opposite of what Arizona does.

The fact Lamar wants 100m guaranteed is crazy enough, much less 100m apart. Baltimore deserves everything they have coming to them if they give Lamar that kind of money.
His numbers are declining annually.

Well yeah, especially after they got burned on their decision give Flacco, at the time, the largest deal in NFL history only to have him fail to lead them to playoffs all but one of his final 6 years with the team (he was 4-5 before getting hurt his last year there when they would make the playoffs on the back of Jackson)

And as this thread is about money, the Ravens made Flacco the highest paid player in the NFL after that season.
And they sucked for the next 4 years as a direct result. Don't think they'll make the same mistake twice.

How do you tell a player he's not wanted, without telling a player he's not wanted?

Mahomes is 1/1. He is a unicorn. Any QB who asks for more money than him should be laughed out of the room.
Lamar Jackson is not Mahomes, and he isn't particularly close to him. His game won't age well because he needs that track speed to be Lamar Jackson. As the speed declines, so will his effectiveness as a player.
Whatever GM gives him the guaranteed money he wants will be fired by the end of the 2024 season.

So has his availability. He's been out for the year after game 12 the past 2 seasons, in 2021 being day-to-day with a bone bruise and missing their last 4 games and in 2022 missing 6 games for a knee sprain that was supposed to be a 1-3 week injury. Either his durability is a developing concern or he checks out when things are going his way which would be equally concerning to me. My gut tells me the latter given he quit playing when playoff hopes looked grim in 2021 and when he was pissed off about his contract situation this year.

Do the majority of Ravens fans still want him?

I wouldn’t give Lamar $100M guaranteed period. $100M apart? Lulz

Common theme to your example.. both teams paying those salaries absolutely suck, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
Posted on 2/7/23 at 5:01 pm to High C
Would rather spend the money on offensive line and weapons and have a quarterback on a rookie deal or a cheap ish free agent instead of allocating 1/4 of the salary cap towards an injury-prone qb. Mahomes is the exception to the rule.
Posted on 2/7/23 at 5:19 pm to lsufball19
Exactly right. These huge contracts are gonna be harder for some qb’s to get in the future.
Posted on 2/7/23 at 5:34 pm to Byrdybyrd05
A HUGE guarantee is problematic for a QB who depends on his legs. One injury or just some age and the fall off is dramatic historically.

Ravens have said that there’s no chance whatsoever that anyone besides Lamar is their qb next year .
I wouldn’t look too much into that

They have?
This is the most recent quote I can find from their GM
quote:
Just, I think, respect, our feelings about him, that we know him, we know the person, our confidence level that he is the right type of guy to lead the team and just optimism. I try to be positive. If you’re going into a negotiation with a negative feeling, then your chances of getting that done probably aren’t going to happen. We’ve done a lot of contracts. I think we’ve [done] the second-most extensions in the league over the last four years, so we know it can happen. We try to be creative and strategic, and I truly believe Lamar [Jackson] wants to finish his career in Baltimore. I just believe that in my conversations with him and just watching him and talking with him and communicating; I think [head coach] John [Harbaugh] feels that way, too. So, all of those things kind of work together for me that tell me that we still have a chance and that I should be as optimistic as possible.”
quote:
Our relationship with Lamar [Jackson], I think is fantastic every single day," DeCosta said. "Now, you can say, ‘What’s it like negotiating?’ That’s a challenge because that’s a business relationship. Anytime you negotiate with anybody, it’s not always going to be an easy conversation had, but that doesn’t affect our feelings for each other or John’s feelings for Lamar or the organization’s feelings for Lamar every single day, his teammates. We all understand this is a business transaction."
