He just can’t be a complete waste of an at bat.
I don’t think the gap between their defensive play is so big that Milazzo can go out there and his .100 below Neal.

They will alternate a good bit imo depending on pitching matchups and the opposing teams desire to steal/hit and run

This catcher conversation is getting to be very repetitive. Multiple catchers will see time with Milazzo and Neal getting the bulk. They will not have an everyday starter. When it comes down to the final stretch later in the year, it will come down to how productive Milazzo's at bats are and how advanced Neal is defensively. Time will tell.
Also, notice I said productive at bats. Some of you pay too much attention to stats like batting average and not at the actual game. If he is drawing walks and moving runners over at the bottom of the lineup, that is what his offensive role will be. That will be successful at bats for him. He will never be Neal offensively but he can give you value at the plate to make it justifiable to play both him and Neal a lot all season.
Having Neal show out defensively will get him most of the playtime at the end of the season, but both of them playing through the season will be the best case scenario. Will keep the position fresh through the whole year into the postseason.

The problem with Milazzo isn’t just the fact that the batting average is terrible.
It’s the fact that he will swing through three straight down the middle fastballs and not even come close to them. He can’t even manage to work walks or at least demand a pitch count.

They both will play. Neal’s bat will be too much to leave off the field. Milazzo will play late innings for defense.

I think he starts for sure. He just needs to hit above the Mendoza line. The amount of runs we gave up last year with McManus and Travinski was ridiculous. Hearing Ryan Theriot speak about Milazzo I’m super confident with him behind the dish

He improved his K rate and his BB rate last year under Jay. About 7 percentage points better on Ks and 5 percentage points better on walks.
Most importantly he doubled his line drive percentage. He's making more and better contact and being more selective under the new coach.

Only one weekend worth of data, but over the weekend he walked 4 times and get 1-6 at the plate. .444 OBP
I was not at the scrimmage to see how his other AB went but he did have 3K for a 33% K rate over the weekend. Again, not much data but just using numbers from the weekend.
Not saying that will carry on, but it is obvious he is working hard on plate discipline big time and trying to do his role at the plate.

The pitching staff will have a lot of input on who they want behind the plate. Milazzo will play more than many believe he should.

Every year there is some great defensive player that has to start even though he can't hit water if he fell out of a boat.
Hopefully, starting this year, we can have good defensive players that can also hit above the Mendoza line.

I have not seen Neal catch so I can't comment on his defensive ability. But if I have to watch a 2nd straight year of catchers dropping fastballs that hit them in the mitt I'm going to lose my mind.

Neal should be going into his senior year of high school. It would not be surprising if he has a learning curve but his talent is huge. I would expect he will be the primary guy back there before the end of April
