I know his bat lacks. But he’s one of…if not THE best…defensive catcher in the country!

Neal had an error that cost his team a run in yesterdays scrimmage. He will def be a good one for us too. But he’s just not on Milazzo’s level defensively yet.

I have always heard the most important traits for a catcher is defense and handling the pitching staff. Anything he provides at the plate is lagniappe.

Also, Milazzo cuts runners down on the reg! Zeb Ruddell tried to steal on him yesterday and the ball was waiting for him at second base when he arrived! Lol

He very well might. The SEC schedule to start the season is going to be brutal with runs at a premium and limiting stolen bases and passed balls will be essential. We'll see.

Milazzo will start opening day but Neal should take over by the time regionals come around.

It's a sliding scale. I'd imagine Jay would be ok with some defensive miscues if his catcher is hitting .300 with 10 HRs.

Ideally, LSU would have two catchers they could rely on so one guy doesn't get worn down by the end of the season. I anticipate Milazzo will play a lot of baseball this year.

There is most likely going to be 3 guys who see significant time at the Catcher position. Milazzo, Travinski, and Neal will all see time there.

I agree that Milazzo is elite defensively and makes a true difference behind the plate. But keeping him in the lineup every game is not the thing to do. That takes a toll on you and Milazzo and Travinski are coming off injuries and should not be catching every game.

Neal threw guys out all fall trying to steal.

Milazzo is the worst hitting regular at LSU in 35 years. He is good on defense, but he isn't good enough to out play that and catch every day.

Milazzo and Neal with both catch this year a lot, who does more than the other depends on 2 things

1. Milazzo improving at the plate
2. Neal able to play solid defensively

Either one of those will tip the scales 1 way or the other who plays more than the other, but we've never gone through a season where only 1 guy starts at catcher all season. Gotta give that guy a break either way at times.

FIFY. Also, I don’t think he should play EVERY day. But the majority of games this year.

I think he should start against LHPs and/or when the other team presents a threat on the bases. I think Neal should start against RHPs when defense projects to be less important.

He is not elite on defense though. He is an elite catch-&-throw guy.

Btw, D1 Baseball just put out their top 50 catchers in college baseball this morning. Alex Milazzo is no where to be found.

Brady Neal comes in at #23.

Because of one error in a scrimmage? Neal’s defense is really good and his offense is light years better.

Good take and I agree! I think with the insane amount of production we should have from the other 8 in our batting lineup, Milazzo should get the nod because of his wizardry behind the plate.

Aside from Milazzo and Neal, you also have Travinski, Frey, and Jones swinging the bat well. You only have 9 spots on the lineup card. Might see 3-4 catchers some weekends depending on game flow.

I disagree with this, unless in the games he does start he becomes average at the plate cannot keep him in the lineup majority of the time.

Milazzo will play when receiving is the priority.

If the game starts to turn and offense is more important, he could be pinch hit for as early as his 2nd plate appearance.

We're going to sub a ton of guys in during pre conference and mid week games.

One thing the pitching may allow for is to carry an extra catcher on SEC weekends. If we don't need to carry as many pitchers because we have guys going deep into games, we can deepen the bench bats.

You laugh but the less he hits, the more people think he is elite across the board. He has a great pop time, but is just a good, not great, receiver. And he is just ok at framing the ball. But hey, he hits .180 he must be yadier molina
