I don't know anybody that really follows the baseball team closely that doesn't believe Milazzo is your starting catcher on 2/17.

And that he's probably not starting on 2/18.

It's been said (by Johnson) that they may use 4 catchers in the first 4 games.

Productive outs tho

I don't think it was ever said that all it would take was productive outs. Productive at bats. Drawing walks, hitting behind runners to move them over, getting a base hit here and there, etc. He has to prove he can do that as the year goes on for any of this Milazzo vs Neal stuff to be relevant.

Best case scenario for LSU is that Milazzo can be good enough to at the plate to play and Neal can be good enough defensively to play. Then you can have both of them playing all season long. Not sure why it has to be a Milazzo vs Neal discussion. We know Neal will be better than Milazzo. I think this year Milazzo and Neal together is best case for LSU.

I don't think he will to be honest.

Isn't Jay also looking at juco catchers? It just makes me wonder what the real plan is for Milazzo. You have Neal, Travinski, Jones, and Frey. By all accounts, Jones and Frey could play another position and maybe Neal works into some DH stints next season...but you may also have Mitchell coming in if he doesn't sign and he's looking at other catchers.

ETA: And I'm fine with loading up the cupboard on catchers, but the numbers get weird for Milazzo and/or Travinski.

There is one on the radar, that can also play other positions. He's a JUCO freshman, so the same class as Neal, Frey, and Jones.

ETA: Neither of the two upcoming classes have guys that would be pigeonholed at 1B. There is a JUCO 1B on the radar as well. But I think that's where Jones and Frey fit in going forward with spot play behind the plate. It seems like Jay's recruiting strategy is the same as MLB teams signing guys in the Caribbean. Every player is a Catcher, Shortstop, or Centerfielder until proven otherwise.

We've argued about Milazzo for two years and his expendability. If there's one year I'll concede his lack of offense for his "defensive ability", it would be this year as we've got murderers row stacked 1-8.

Milazzo has been atrocious at the plate but if you're going to put a .200 hitter in the lineup, this the year to do it without reservation.

It’s just the nature of baseball. Only 1 spot so there will always be competition.

I this particular instance you are talking about the college game, it’s a little more personal to begin with. But you have a hometown kid, who by all accounts does everything right. But he’s also very clearly a backup type player.

It’s hard to read some of the things used to try & prop him up. I’m not sensitive to that stuff. We all know what the barometer is and that ain’t it.

Neal is pretty good defensively. I think Milazzo only plays when the opponent has little offensive firepower at the plate, but are strong on the bases, and we have hot starter throwing.

you can only use a DH for pitcher, unless college rules are different than MLB but I don't think they are

I agree with you for the most part. Neal is the catcher of the future for sure. This season however, both of them will have to compliment each other all season while Neal gets in game reps at the college level for LSU to be the best they can be throughout the year. I'm not trying to prop Milazzo up. His defense/receiving is good and his pop time is great. However he hasn't shown anything at the plate in his career. That is why a lot of what I am saying has a lot to do with if he improves and puts productive at bats together like Jay has said he has been working on and showing.

Strong, accurate arm and the best we have at blocking wild pitches

He really is an impressive defensive player.

You can’t DH for anyone but the pitcher.
