Being that I’m 27, I’d rather not get on medications to lower cholesterol. What kind of diet/exercises would you recommend to help lower that number?

This. Also, Fish oil or krill oil did wonders for me. Now I just eat sardines because I’m nasty.

get your diet right, doesnt matter how you go, just get in a caloric defeciet and priortize protien(assuming you are overweight)

for workouts...just lift 3-4 times a week in a progressive manner(follow a plan) and try and get 10k steps in every single day

when it comes to diet, cut out alcohol, stop eating processed crap, stop drinking calories.

if you want other items to help krill oiil or a very high quality fish oil, citrus bergmnont, and berberine all will help.

Question on cutting alcohol, is that because it is assumed that you're adding unneeded calories with beer or mixed drinks, or is there something about the alcohol itself? I haven't been drinking much at all lately, but when I do it's straight whisky, no added sugar. Small volume, but concentrated.

Not a doctor but I agree with what's been said. All things being equal lower your body fat and cut out the stupid shite.

both, alcohol tends to cause storage of visceral fat.

1 time a week in small amounts of straight alcohol is fine, but 3,4, even 5 times a week ....yea no bueno.

The fitness industry is a psyop created by neoprohibitionist globalists. Back in the day you worked at the factory and got drunk at the bowling alley every day with your boys and you were swole and naturally healthy

Alcohol isn’t bad for you on its own but if you add cringe double hops or sugar like in girl drinks that’s bad for you

ETA: alcohol is actually good for you. Did you know that monkeys, which can bench press like 500 lbs, make their own alcohol by stuffing fruit into volcanic pools?

Lowering Cholesterol
First, you should determine what we are even talking about and if it's a worthy endeavor. Which cholesterol?

In general, high cholesterol is correlated - if anything - with LOWER all-cause mortality.

If you are eating properly, cholesterol shouldn't be a concern.

What is your tri:HDL ratio?

Give up booze…

I have some questions on this. Since 2016, I have ran regularly, but also consumed around 14 beers a week (There is a medical reason to stop there.). I felt fairly fit. However, right before my son was born last spring, knee pain from running was really coming on. Given that I want to be active when he is older, I started going to the gym more and cycling more in place of running. Around late October, I also really cut down on the booze. I have noticed that the bloat and love handles with less booze, but less cardio, seem to be better than the running and beer mentioned above. I also feel better doing less impacting work outs. I suppose my questions are…will I keep seeing benefits after cutting out booze for beyond 75 days, and will be heart remain as healthy without doing as much cardio?

The fact that it took almost a full page of posts before someone raised these points shows just how prevalent the cholesterol = bad mindset is. Everyone just assumes that lowering it is good, and here is how the OP should do it.

I’m also shocked that it seems as if statins were pushed on the OP. Absolutely shocked. It would be helpful to know more details about the OP’s situation.

THIS.

The evidence supporting a link between higher LDL and higher mortality is getting weaker by the day. Triglyceride:HDL ratio is a much better indicator of cardiovascular issues. The closer to 1:1 you can get the better. Some individuals can even get below that. Above 3:1 is when your risk starts really climbing.

I was in the same boat a couple years ago - total cholesterol and LDL high, not off the charts, but sufficiently high that the PCP gave the choice of a statin or trying to reduce it on my own through dietary changes and exercise. I preferred not take a statin so these are the dietary changes I made.

Switched from whole milk to 1%, I used to drink an ice cream milkshake nightly, eliminated that completely - don’t keep ice cream in the house anymore, started using low fat versions of all dairy products, increase my consumption of higher fiber foods like beans, avocados - foods I always liked and ate - just increased the frequency at which I ate them. I seldom ate breakfast for years, but started eating high fiber cereal for breakfast on a regular basis. No changes in alcohol consumption - not a heavy drinker to begin with. By and large those are the only significant dietary changes I made, and I’ve stuck with them.

In 1 year I dropped total cholesterol to normal, LDL dropped 40 units - still a tad higher than normal but nothing worrisome; VLDL, HDL and triglyceride normal - even my PCP was impressed with the reductions.

I didn’t add a structured exercise regime as I intended to the first year along with dietary changes as I’m pretty active and not over weight - but I began following this board for the past year and I’ve added cardio and resistance training. Will have another lipid panel done in the next month or 2 to see where I currently stand.

Dietary cholesterol does not influence blood cholesterol.
