The Beau Philip pick was awful. Sometimes it seems they get a little cute with going for savings early.

I got the strategy and I believe everyone knew it was strictly for savings but there had to be a better option there for somebody who would sign for $700k.

The savings there did allow them to sign Grissom, Estes, Backstrom, etc. but what a terrible player Philip himself is.

I really don’t understand what point you’re trying to make. What exactly has he done in terms of building the farm that you think is substandard? The draft is the only thing he can be judged on and the results are very good.

I pretty much said it in my first comment and people chose to take it in a million other directions , I don't think he is going to be that great at guiding a team through a rebuild given what we know right now because he has never done it, and our farm is atrocious right now. Like someone else said, his early picks have been pretty bad. The scouting department is usually more responsible for mid to late round hits like Strider and Harris, and Dana Brown is likely gone in the next few years for a GM job (though to be clear AA still gets some credit for those guys, GMs are just usually a lot more hands on with the first and second rounders).

Once we are out of our window I think we are gonna be in pretty rough shape, which for most people is worth it for even 1 WS much less if we get multiple.

I think that for the most part (outside of the occasional cheap signing and hopefully Fried getting the biggest contract in club history I know ) the club is set for the next half decade, and I feel like we’re going to see the farm take a higher priority going forward. Give AA the next 5 years to rebuild it and I bet it’s one of the best again.

Yeah I think you give him the chance to do a rebuild if he wants it, maybe hes just a unicorn and good at everything

It's not good when the always-cheery CespedesFamilyBBQ is coming in with negativity.

While the 6-foot-3 rookie impressed offensively as infield stalwart Ozzie Albies was on the IL, his glove at second base underwhelmed. Grissom was worth minus-four outs above average — in a small sample size, which can be interpreted two ways. Considering the difficulty for many in transitioning from second to the six, there’s reason to doubt his viability as a big-league shortstop.

Something is being leaked to the media, either from the Braves or elsewhere, because it's not a coincidence that we have that thing from Cespedes Family BBQ and now Mark Bowman questioning Grissom as a SS within hours of each other.

LINK

quote:

When I first saw Grissom during Minor League Spring Training last year, I asked about him and was told he might eventually become a second baseman or third baseman. As the next couple of months unfolded, other scouts expressed doubt about his ability to be an everyday shortstop at the big league level.

So, I have my doubts about Grissom’s ability to replace Dansby Swanson. Let’s not forget this young infielder began last year at High-A and arrived in the Majors by early August. The Braves don’t win the NL East without him producing a .956 OPS through his first 26 games. But he didn’t look comfortable at second base, and he tallied a .460 OPS over the 53 plate appearances that followed.

Another interesting tidbit from that article:

quote:

I’d put Grissom in left field during Spring Training just to see if he could handle that position on an everyday basis. He’s certainly athletic enough to handle the position defensively. If there’s a desire to put his bat in the lineup every day, this should at least be an option.

I agree with this. If the team doesn't think he's ready for short, see if he can handle left.

This is weird how all of the sudden the media has gone from "Grissom is working out with Wash in NOLA, he'll be SS" to "Maybe Grissom should work out in LF"

There is some coordinated inside information being sent out. It's weird.

Vaughn Grissom in LF feels like an option for down the line, if at all this season. If he doesn't win the #Braves' starting SS job, I'd prioritize getting him regular playing time there in AAA or working on OF then. He's young and the bat should play. Where(?) is up in the air.

Looks like Ian Anderson has spent some time at the Wake Forest pitching lab

Hopefully he's working on a curve.

And the Wake Forest lab is one of, if not *the* best collegiate pitching labs in the country.

Doesn’t make any sense for that to come from the Braves camp. It’s not like there are other options at SS for them to sell fans.

Couple of notes from Snit and the players at Fan Fest today:

- No plan for Grissom to play LF in the spring, although Snit mentioned he has the athleticism to do it. It'll be a battle between him and Arcia for SS, no one is going in as the starter.

- Acuna says he is 100%, said he hated DHing last season and has no plans on doing it this year.

- No restrictions for Ozzie this past offseason, he said he was cleared to play had the Braves made the NLCS last season.

Sell to fans? The Braves don’t have to do a thing for the fans. They drew over 3 million after the “face of the franchise” was sent walking. If you think the Braves are worried about anything other than winning the World Series you are wrong. They own the southeast right now.

And I still don’t get all the angst over the SS position. Dansby got better year after year but it wasn’t like we lost a top tier guy. There’s a reason of the free agents he was the least. And I still say we’ll get decent and close to comparable stats at the SS position just like we did at the 1B position after losing Freddie. There are a lot of good ball players out there. Grissom and Arcia are major leaguers for a reason.

Literally won the gold glove last year.

Olson's 2022 was nowhere close to Freddie's 2021. That's not me liking Freddie more than Olson. That's just a factual statement.

Jury is still out on Grissom as a MLBer, not enough of a sample size, but Arcia hasn't been a starter for a reason.

You constantly pointing out that it's just going to be business as usual at short without Dansby is wild. Maybe Grissom had a crazy good offseason and replaces Dansby no problem, but conventional wisdom says we're downgrading at SS for this season.

Mike Soroka is in good spirits. It seems like he feels like himself again. He’ll be a full go — and on the same schedule as the other pitchers — come spring. He’s really excited to get to camp.

that's all well and good when you can bring in another guy viewed as a preseason mvp candidate. Repeatedly replace all stars with unproven rookies and fans will be less enthusiastic
