I would imagine a lot of DEI and HR positions are on the block in the impending layoffs. A lot of those positions are redundant, unnessecary, overhead, and people who want to exclusively WFH.

You’d think so, but the demand for “diversity” is still strong.

Not with ESG dominating investments and capital, unfortunately

Those who choose to completely work remotely will realize how much easier it is to be fired. It’s no longer an employees job market

Company I used to work for went full remote in 2020. It’s way easier to fire people in that environment. Most of the dept I was in has been let go since I left.

what do you do for work

Petrochemicals.... manufacturing. I support a few different units.

During Rona, I was astounded at the amount of people I knew who'd say "just work from home!!!". As if all jobs can do that.

I agree with other posters who've pointed out that many people have proven themselves redundant and are about to be in trouble.

IMO Leadership roles in tech aren't great WFH candidates, but pretty much anyone below that on the actual tech side of the company is pretty safe. This basically lands on the engineering group, product group, and design group.

I've had online meeting with these people sitting in the same building. It's the nature of the business.

People have changed. They've been mislead about their worth, and they can't handle a sneeze properly. Their attention span is fleeting. They want the moon, when they haven't earned dirt. It's like herding cats.

Overpaid administrators are a big problem for a lot of companies, interesting to see what happens.

Yeah, it's unclear what Burry means by "culprit" here as it relates to WFH.

Burry means that WFH will be unfairly blamed. WFH exposes - at least in tech in my experience - how unnecessary and redundant some jobs are in a technology organization. That was always my observation and biggest complaint looking back on my 20+ working for tech companies. Outside of sales and development, what in the hell are all these people doing? Nattering and poor work ethic are pet peeves of mine.

I told my teams that here are our companies terms:
1. You are free to work from home if you desire it and are able to complete 100% of your tasks from home.
2. Those that choose to work from home will still be reviewed for cost of living or performance raises when indicated.
3. Those that choose to work from home are not considered for promotion or upper level management.

My reasons?
I cannot place you in my most trusted positions if I do not interact with you regularly.

A. Character matters.
B. Temperament matters.
C. How quickly you solve problems and resolve conflict in the moment matters.

I can judge none of these by emails.

What did I “not” tell my work from home employees? That If they prove to me that their job can be done at home - the job market of competition for them is open across the globe.

We completely replaced our billing department from oversees for 40% of the expense and we have collected more (quarterly) than ever before. I was sad to let those people go but business is business when we don’t share space and form relationships.

I was in the process of evaluating replacing our IT department with overseas as well. However, in a coincidental event, after we fired the billing team - the entire IT team came back to the office except for one guy who wife is battling cancer. He is a great worker and I support his working from home.

Just to give you guys some history on our company - we have only fired 3 people in the last 8 years before this WFH concept began. We have a great work environment that supports anyone who needs support for a crisis. But we have no intention of supporting your personal job flexibility desires.

Companies have seen huge dips in productivity since WFH started but have also noticed many jobs just aren't needed.

That and with more AI coming into play it might be time for those people to learn to plumb or weld
