Break up cinnamon Graham crackers and eat them in a bowl with milk like cereal. I’ll eat sliced peaches that way too with a little sugar. We used to eat sliced bananas that way too but I haven’t done that since I was a kid. Another thing I haven’t had since I was a kid was what we called “milk soup.” That was just white bread torn up and eaten in a bowl of milk like cereal with brown sugar added. I used to take little pieces of the bread without crust and squeeze them into little chewy dough balls for an occasional surprise in the dish.

But Graham crackers and milk rules. I’ve got a box right now just for that purpose.

Made some pigs in the blanket for the kids today. Always reminds me of stock mornings at a little grocery store I used to work at, we'd go get a few packs of crescent rolls, hot dogs and rip a few slices of colby jack from the deli and a couple minutes later we feasted.

Salmon patties. My mom made them with saltines. They would suck all the moisture out of your mouth but I kinda miss them.

Ground beef and carrots. My mom would cut up carrots into small pieces and cook it down with some ground beef, onion, and garlic.

We eat it a lot, because it is quick and simple, and the kids all love it, but every now and again even when I have time to prepare something better I get an envie for it.

The other thing that really takes me back is field peas with either dove, squirrel or rabbit. Field pieces got harvested in september/october, so we ate that with game meat at least twice a week growing up. I will cook that a few times every fall.

Mine would be when my mom went out of town, my dad would feed us spam for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

So much fricking spam.

Bisquick Impossible Pie. Pretty darn simple and cheap, basically a quiche, I freaking loved them. Haven't had one since I lived at my parents right at 18 years ago now

When my mom was in a hurry and had to make a quick breakfast it would be toast pancakes. Toasted bread, butter, and maple syrup.

Way better than it should be.

Grew up with a single mom and not a lot of money, so we were really good with making the best of it. If we did not have leftovers from my grandmother’s house, some of my favorites were:

-Shake & bake chicken wings — I used to crush these!
-Brinner — still one of my favorites. (Breakfast for dinner). Fried ham (never had bacon) canned biscuits and steen’s syrup
-Beef & Vegetable soup

If I was lucky enough to have a few extra bucks I’d walk over to the butcher shop down the street and pick up some boudin. The owner was friends with my pawpaw, so if he ever saw me he would give me a little extra. Sad, but those days are gone now.

My Paw Paw used to make us kids what he called "Ho Cake" 8 year old me remembers it as a giant biscuit that he made the size of the cast iron skillet and fried it in butter, then served with syrup. I've tried Googling a Ho cake recipe but everything comes up as corn meal recipes as opposed to Bisquick like he used. Also another meal from childhood I hope to never have to eat again is fried mullet. We were poor so my dad would go throw the net on the beach several times a week for my entire childhood. I can't remember how many times I watched the sun come up from that flat bottom boat before school. I relish the memories with him, but don't want to ever eat mullet again.
