Damn these racist rivers!
This country is so racist that “systemic racism” includes the river systems!

Over the past ten years, 28 people have drowned on the Chattahoochee River within the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area, and 16 of those have occurred at one site known as “diving rock.” All but one of those drowning victims was a Black male between the ages of 17 to 24.
what exactly does your victim complex have you hyperventilating over this time? these are just numbers dude. you think the numbers are out to get you?

The OP seems to have you melting. You should go for a swim and cool off.

Why was race the focal point of the story?

“systemic racism”

This is not isolated to just the Chattahoochee River.
It's a cultural problem. "White" culture makes it an effort to teach their kids how to swim and the dangers of water.

I wade fish the Chattahoochee not far from there. It is a dangerous river for anyone and evidently deadly for those who may panic in the water.
1. The water comes from the bottom of a 500 foot dam and at that point in the river warms up a bit but is shockingly cold. This is why trout live in the river year round and there is a population of wild, reproducing trout.
2. When the dam is closed the river has a slight current and but where I fish is about two to four feet deep. When the dam is open the current is extremely fast and over six feet deep and no one can swim against it. One needs to swim with it.
A non-swimmer can play in the river a few times when the dam is closed (most of the time) and be fine. Then go to the same area when the dam is open and get swept away.
3. This is a shallow, rocky river with a good number of downed trees in it. The perfect combination to pin someone under water when the current is high.

...or in the dangers of ANYTHING. Thinking of the future is white trait, according to the Smithsonian. Black people, generally speaking, live in the "now" and don't perceive consequences. Hence, more murders, more auto accidents, more drownings, more broken necks from diving in pools, etc, per capita.
