I sous vide some filet mignons tonight for dinner. I had a bourbon with dinner, then had two for after dinner.
While on number four, I was cleaning the kitchen, and curing the black iron skillet. I got distracted, and about 30 minutes later, MrsAntiqueTiger sees the stove still on, with the skillet sitting on it. The damn thing was nearly white.
If this happens to you, do not put the skillet in the sink.
Remove it from the heat (set outside if possible) let sit for a few minutes, and then wipe it with a towel with oil soaked in it. Do it lightly. The oil will cool it off.

If this happens to you, turn the damn thing off and walk away or throw it in the oven for christ sake. But in all fairness, drunk cookery is still fun as all get out.

Or put it outside. The point I was making was not to put it in the sink and run water on it. I think that’s the first instinct people will do. It could crack the skillet, plus it could flash.

Not a big deal. People I know in Lafitte build a fire and throw all their cast iron pots/skillets on it until they turn white. It's good for the cookware!
Just set it on the stove to cool. What's the big deal?

I get your point, but I assume that is not most peoples first instinct. Something that hot should just be left alone if on a safe space such as a stove. Also why I like to season on the pit outside. Set it and forget it.

Maybe the first instinct drunk people will do/have.

If I walk in the kitchen and see the cast iron screaming hot I'm gonna look for something to sear

or...you could just turn the burner off and walk away. 220/221, whatever it takes

Yeah, I’m typically not moving an extremely hot cast iron pot and I’m definitely not rubbing oil in it with it being extremely hot.

why would you grab a white hot skillet to bring it outside? just turn off the oven and crack the oven door and walk away.

Imagine all the garbage that would have been lost if your house had caught fire.

there wasn't even an open flame and not sure how bourbon played a factor in this

Because my down draft vent doesn’t work with a damn (like most down drafts) and it was smoking it’s arse off.

Do any electrical work or run the chainsaw while on this 4 drink bender?

Harvest sells cast iron skillets and bourbon. You'll be fine finding new ones. No need to be so dramatic.
