Just had to get a plumber out to fix some pipe near the main valve outside. I know it’s the weekend but they are charging 270$ for first hour and 220$ for every hour after that. Seems high even for a weekend service call. This company has good reviews . Have I just been out the game too long ?

Update: a very concentrated leak near the water valve in front of the house has now turned into water coming up through the flooring near the kitchen island between the kitchen and living room. I feel like the guy that came out eff’d something up worse and is calling it a big coincidence. Pretty pissed and unsure what to do now.

Yea there prices are insane. That’s why I have learned to DIY most stuff. They make more than 99% of people with college degrees.

I’m with you. Usually a YouTube video or a good buddy can help get me through most anything but the water was coming outta there pretty good and out into the cul-de-sac so I figured I needed something done in a hurry.

For a plumbing company, $200-$250 is typical now. You can get a plumber on the side for half that but with less reliability.

one guy or two?

most charge rates based on having 2 people on the job

not a whole lot that they do is only a one man job

The plumbing board is just as corrupt in Louisiana as everything else. The ridiculous barriers to get a license are an absolute joke. They keep out competition so the big guys can make all the money.

I work for a company that basically does plumbing work on a larger scale and the hourly labor rate is $330 per hour.

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard…

They must be doing full CFD analysis on each line they install.

Was just talking with the wife’s old uncle the other day and he told me he paid several hundred dollars just in labor to have a elec hot water heater changed out. Said the guy was charging 100$ an hour and when he questioned him the guy said he was half as cheap as anyone else. Unc called around and said sure as shite he was.
I told him I would have done it for free, hopefully he don’t have any more go out!!
Oh Baton Rouge area

In January 2016,i think it was then state rep Lopinto, created a bill that became law which forced all Mechanical contractors ( AC guys )
to buy plumbing board licenses for a Master Gas Fitter. At $ 190 a year, plus continuing education classes upwards of $ 500, i can only speculate as to the intent of this. I envision this idea having been discussed in a Metairie road coffee shop. So, all Mech Lic guys had to June 30 ( end of fiscal year) of i believe 2018 to get the license under grandfather qualifications. After that they would have to take the big test. Six days prior to that deadline, a North LA senator got that law thrown out. All them guys spent $ 190 for nothing.

*TYPICALLY* Monday through Friday 8-5 is straight time. Weekdays (after 5 pm) and Saturdays will be x 1.5. Sundays are usually double time.

That’s not normal rates but a lot of normal plumbers aren’t working a Sunday service call either. A lot of those guys are something like Benjamin Franklin or otherwise out to do the nights and weekends to rip people off that are willing to pay.

I have a company that charges $250/ hour for after hours starting at 4pm but they start charging from their door.

People want to talk about plumbers making a ton, but the owners are the ones doing well. I’ve yet to meet a plumber or electrician that looks like a guy making $150k.

I wouldn’t jump to blame the guy that was working in one area of the house and a leak sprang up somewhere else. That is likely unrelated.

I remember seeing a plumber's truck in a pic years ago that had this signage on the side, and it pretty much sums it up for me.

Explain what a guy making $150k is supposed to look like?

Also, OP, when you pay a good plumber by the hour it often ends up being the same cost or less than a "cheap" plumber.

That’s what I’m thinking too now that cooler heads have prevailed. Maybe it was just a weak spot in the piping and turning the water off and on was the death blow.
