March 1918

We've often discussed what the world would have looked like had Imperial Germany achieved enough success on the Western Front to force the Allies to the Peace Table. During these discussions, we always correctly focus on the 1914 Western Front campaign.

However, IMHO, most of us overlook the fact that Imperial Germany had a shot at Victory in 1918! I maintain that, if Ludendorff had managed his 1918 campaign more skillfully, the Allies would have been forced to the Peace Table.

Lots of interesting reading and food for thought on the Westfront 1918 is available.

The world would likely be a vastly different place had Germany won WWI, or at least forced a peace agreement that benefited both sides.

No Hitler. No Nazis.

The USSR would likely become the ultimate problem in the ‘40-60s.

Japan’s course would be interesting, considering their massive cultural shift status post the atomic bombs.

Wonder if it would be better or worse than we currently are.

It could be argued that had the Ottomans survived WW I, there is no 9/11, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Egypt, Lebanon, etc or middle east strife.

More likely that the US fully commits and Germany holds out one more year.

The second that Ludendorff/Hindenburg re-started unrestricted sub warfare, they lost the war.

Socialist revolution breaks out in defeated France and spreads to England.

This is a gross oversimplification.

Germany was crumbling from the inside. Their own workers, sailors, etc... were mutinying and occupying government buildings. By 1918 it was going to be near impossible for the Kaiser to hold on to power in Germany, let alone win a war against another country.

I don’t think they could have won it in 1918. Germans could have turned the tide and perhaps ended with a German victory with the last ditch offensive. But it would have been in 1919 or later.

I disagree. The German people were done. Those little successes in 1918 weren’t sustained.

Even if the US doesn’t enter the war, Germany is done by 1919 in my opinion. Austria-Hungary and The Ottomans were calling it quits in 1918 regardless.

A flight of fantasy. Germany was facing critical shortages in 1918. The British navy had effectively shut off shipping. The Germans could not get oil out of Romania due to the British commandos blowing up the oil refineries there. The entrance of the Americans tipped the scales very much in favor of the Allies in 1917 by early 1918 they were in an unwinnable position.

Britain and France could have won thae war by themselves over time. The British in particular were leveraging their access to oil in Persia and Royal Dutch Shell , although ostensibly a Dutch company was sending most of its oil to the UK. On top of it the French and English were also using troops from the empire. We tend to think of the English Tommy's, but there were close to a million Indians involved as well and Aussies and Canadians. The French were leveraging a lot of their African colonies....the Senegalese and Algerian and Moroccans.

The Americans were essentially brought in for the kill shot during the summer of 1918.

Had a guy in my neighborhood display an imperial german flag from WW1. You could see it from the entrance. Somebody complained to the HOA and they got a warning to take it down. They then lost it in the neighborhood facebook group.

Pretty funny.

Germany didn't have the manpower capability of the British Empire. The American intervention certainly moved the inevitably process forward, but even in a trench stalemate, the British and French would have prevailed even at an even more horrendous loss of life.

I wonder if the guy who makes posts about “this day in military history” will start a thread tomorrow on the anniversary of the battle of the Somme?

I’ve been reading and watching anything I can get my hands on the Somme recently after visiting the battle field in April.
