I think the student loan forgiveness thing is a bad idea for many reasons. However, I really hate that people who did the right thing and paid them off (especially during these past couple of years when interest was at 0%) are screwed over.

Yes, I'm mad because I paid them off during the freeze.

I will be mad if they make the forgiveness $20k b/c it will tell me that I shouldn't have paid my SL during the freeze.

It will still make me mad b/c I've paid tens of thousands of dollars ahead already and they won't rebate me that money, either.

Just allow people to write them off in bankruptcy

Because they could get ahead on their loan without compounding interest and pay it off quicker. Many will not qualify for debt cancellation, whenever that comes.

Only if you plan to spend the rest of your life as a vegetable, otherwise it’s not dischargeable as part of bankruptcy.

You can do that without paying during the freeze lol.

I haven’t paid a single cent on my students loans since march of 2020 and I will still never pay another cent in interest on them.

Every human interest story published focuses on peoples’ inability to pay down their debt. It seems like the practical solution would be to just eliminate the interest.

Or just reduce the statute of limitation for pursuit. The system is out of balance when the SOL for a student loan is the same as a homicide.

I'll just be mad watching debt get canceled while I'm paying my 6 figure student debt while also knowing that I'm funding the canceled student loans with my 6 figure annual tax bill.

Double ouch.

Maybe because they aren't pieces of shite and they believe they should repay the money they borrowed and not try to get something for free.

Nothing about that requires you to pay loans when your lender explicitly tells you that you do not have to pay at this time.

If they cancel any amount of student debt then they should eliminate the student loan program going forward.

It is patently unfair for the American taxpayers to redirect wealth to college educated people. This would be at the expense of people who couldn't afford to attend college or were responsible enough to pay the loans they incurred
