Added a 40V Ryobi a few weeks ago.
I already had the other attachments: edger and blower.

A lot of professional lawn businesses have switched to batter powered string trimmers. They have come a long way in recent years. No fuel or engine maintenance to mess with. Batteries are smaller and lighter than engines + gas tanks. They will cut through anything gas powered ones will. When you start weighing the pros and cons it’s no contest.

The only problem is a battery costs more than a new unit when it goes bad in two years.

quote:The Ego batteries are high as giraffe pussy, but for home use they'll last longer than two years. I can't say how many charge cycles you'll get out of one using it daily as a lawn service, but my guess is it's easily worth it. I know fuel tanks are tiny (a quart? half a quart?), but it's still 50 cents or so a tank vs 10 cents to charge a battery pack. Forty cents per yard for two years will easily cover the cost of a new battery. And that's not even counting the time saved not dicking around with fuel and oil and filters and carbs and whatnot.

That sissy shite would never get through some of the thick saint aug that I have in my yard
St Aug in the yard should be cut with a mower. You don't cut the yard with a weed eater unless you have a sissy arse tiny yard..

This- I can’t understand how the same people on here that piss on electric cars all day run to say electric weedeater because they can’t figure out how to do simple maintenance on a small gas engine.
I have a Stihl that is TWENTY years old. My parents gave it to me as a house warming present.
I PROMISE you that none of this battery stuff some of us are incessantly bragging on here will be functioning in 20 years.

Battery can’t hold its own where I live.

I have one from when I used to live in a subdivision and had a very small yard. It was perfect for that yard and you’re right, it’s so much easier to work with. However, after almost seven years in my new home on an acre with lots of fence line and other crap to weed eat, it’s crap. I bought a new battery for it once since having my new yard and that seemed to add power and life but now, a couple years later, I’m done. I just cut grass on Sunday and was telling my wife afterwards about it being time for me to finally get a gas powered weed eater and blower. I can’t do it anymore with this big yard and the freaking jungle that grows in it.

I've had the same Echo weed eater for 20'ish years. Runs like a top. Don't buy a weed eater at Wal Mart.

I have had a Stihl FS 56 since 2016. The only thing I have ever changed on it was the spark plug 1 time, all other parts including the bump head are the original factory parts.
Oh, and no, I do not live on a tiny lot. I live on 1.5 acres with a ditch running 270+ Ft with 3-5 feet of weedeating on both sides.
Stihl and TruFuel for the win!

quote:In many cases it's not that they can't figure it out, rather it's because all that maintenance is a pointless exercise and a waste of time. Technology has improved, take advantage of it. The goal of every technology is to get more done with less human time and effort and/or at lower total cost. That's why you use a gas trimmer instead of something manually operated.

If you had a battery trimmer already, and it did absolutely everything you need it to do with very little maintenance, why would you even consider switching to a different technology that doesn't do anything more for you other than add a lot more labor?

My Echo has required zero maintenance over the last 4 years and is a way more efficient trimmer than my 40v electric one.
At my old house that wasn't a big deal, but my yard is 3 times as big, so that efficiency is worth dealing with gas.

love my ego mower, but ended up bringing the ego trimmer back because that line IQ was annoying. May go back for an older model
but currently still have a ryobi trimmer/edger that gets the job done

quote:I tend to lump all of the gas-related operations and maintenance together. From buying gas to handling/storing the can, priming/choking/cranking, etc. Anything beyond the 5 seconds it takes me to move the battery from the charger to the trimmer and back again is wasted time IMO. Four years of that easily adds up to hours, valuable time better spent posting on TD.

You don’t know what you are talking about. My 40w DeWalt battery powered trimmer could take your leg off with the right string. Noise doesn’t equal power.

I'd be shocked if I have an hour total over the 4 years doing any of that. You also ignore the time spent charging the battery when it runs out and having to wait. Sure, you may have an extra battery, but now you've added more costs and storage to the equation.

As long as you don't encounter anything too thick, sure. There is no comparison as to what each trimmer is capable of tackling.
