Tesla Asking Owners to Limit Charging During Texas Heatwave to Relieve Power Grid

Tesla owners saw a warning on their screens recently, asking them to limit charging during peak hours to relieve Texas’ power grid.
quote:
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) announced last week that six of its power generation facilities went offline following a high demand for power amid a heatwave. During the outage, the six stations would have produced enough electricity to power more than half a million homes. Electric automaker Tesla, which is now headquartered in the state, followed up by asking owners of its vehicles to avoid charging their cars during peak hours in order to help prevent a further increase in demand for electricity.
"A heatwave is expected to impact the grid in Texas over the next few days," reads a photo of a message pushed to Tesla vehicles in Texas posted to Reddit last week. "The grid operator recommends avoiding charging during peak hours between 3 pm and 8 pm, if possible, to help statewide efforts manage demand."
quote:
For EV owners in Texas, conserving electricity doesn't just mean charging during off-peak hours. It also means adjusting driving habits—perhaps driving less overall or not turning the air conditioning down quite as far. Given that Texas also has the third-highest number of electric cars registered in the entire United States, it's easy to see how reducing the number of EVs charging at one time could reduce the stress on an already taxed grid.
quote:
According to research conducted by AAA, EVs can experience up to a 17 percent drop in range with the air conditioning on in 95-degree weather. Tesla has previously disputed this figure, according to The Verge, as have owners. However, there is one clear way to ensure that a vehicle is spending less time plugged in: don't take frequent, short trips that allow the cabin to become hot between drives. Maintaining a set temperature consumes less energy than cooling a sun-heated cabin, so reducing the number of short trips may prevent the need to plug in as frequently during a time when the power infrastructure is in high demand.

Tesla Asking Owners to Limit Charging During Texas Heatwave Isn’t a Good Sign

Texas starting to sound like California

Keep closing your coal, natural gas, and nuclear plants and replacing with solar panels and windmills. This is the end result. It will only get worse.

Maybe they should charge $4.29 a gallon for it.

If I had a Tesla and lived in Texas, I would charge my car exclusively during those hours.

Well didn’t they all move to Texas

As someone who has lived in TX for the last 7 years, the state really needs to get their shite together when it comes to power.
“Freedom” ain’t gonna get you far if your electric grid constantly shits the bed.

I thought the grid issues were reserved problematic for communist states?

Feels like an easy jump to restricted charging, where the vehicle won’t accept a charge until the powers that be allow.

I was told electric vehicle charging was cheap. Which should also mean not a big drain on the system. Where's the lie?

This will be EVERYWHERE if the shift to electric cars goes at the speed the current administration wants it to. If we want a majority of the cars to be electric WE WILL NEED MORE POWER PLANTS AND AN UPGRADED ELECTRICAL GRID.
Honestly if the emphasis was “conservation” then prorate the consumption. If you consume low amounts then you pay a better rate if you want to crank the AC down to 68 in all the rooms of your house while also charging your 2 electric cars then you pay a much higher rate.

The Biden administration has a lot in common with Chinese communist regime. They make outrageous claims and expect we take it as gospel despite the fact it doesn’t make sense. When someone points out it doesn’t make sense, we’re gaslighted and told we’re spreading misinformation or extreme-right propaganda.
“Everyone needs to buy electric cars.”
We don’t have the energy or infrastructure for everyone to drive electric cars.
“YOU TRUMPERS ARE RUINING THIS COUNTRY WITH YOUR MAGA PROPAGANDA!”
At least we aren’t being sent to reeducation camps, or disappeared completely, when we speak out. Yet.

Why should I be inconvenienced when others aren't? Me charging during those hours is me telling the government to GFY.

Wind and solar have absolutely nothing to do w/the Texas power grid issues.
Tesla charging doesn't do much of anything either.
To ease the stress on our grid you'd have to convince people to stop blasting their AC all day every day.
Our population has exploded in the last 30 years (17m in '90 to 29m now) and the various power companies have done a mediocre job keeping up w/the needed expansion. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'll tell you what should be the lead. It's that Abbott and Perry have watched this state grow by 8.25M from 2000 - 2020 and have done nothing to ensure the providers are doing all they can to keep our lights on.

Sounds like you might need to move to Oklahoma or Louisiana. We are shrinking so we should have extra power.

I’d be curious as to what levers a state government could pull to fast track a combined cycle gas turbine power station.
Can one get planned, permitted, built, and commissioned in 4 years?
