Why are so many employers not able to get or keep employees?

It’s not uncommon to go to a corner store for a note on the door stating closed due to no employees.

Or wait in long lines to check out because of few employees.

Is the economy so good that people don’t have to work ?

Because most employers aren't as smart as we give them credit for is the simple answer.

The most basic explanation IMO is that never before in history have people been as lazy and unmotivated as they are now.

I have a theory…

Unskilled workers that are moderately motivated are doing gig jobs. Stuff like uber, delivering groceries, and/or whatever other gig stuff is out there.

That leaves the least motivated and flakiest spread out across service industry jobs.

I thought after COVID unemployment ran out, we would be back to normal. Did people stack up cash during rent moratoriums and are they still living off of that?

The unemployment extra money boost ran out but unemployment benefits are still there

People figured out they can live perfectly fine on $600/week plus whatever other benefits they can scrape up

Better than actually working and making $1000 a week

I saw an interesting argument today.

The author argued that employees are moving into better jobs, they’re leaving the corner store because they can make more doing something else, in this tight market.

Works until inflation makes that $600 a month worth closer to $300 a month.

Even with Section 8, food stamps, unemployment, etc, you gotta have a hustle to make the ends.

My theory is that what we think the deal is with benefits is maybe not as accurate as we think, and there’s more to be had than we know. Maybe other programs we’re not aware of, etc. Plus perhaps well known ways of working the system. All that plus side hustle of robbing and scheming.

It has always been difficult getting employees at so-called corner stores. With the rise in costs associated with hiring, employee salaries going up 50 - 100 % for entry positions, and the true rate of inflation for goods/supplies/cost of food at around 30+%, you can see why so many small businesses cannot stay open or keep their employees. Things are tough out there, please be kind to your local businesses who are still able to keep their doors open. A kind word is always appreciated and long waits simply mean the employees who are working are doing the best they can and you should try and be understanding.

Social media! It’s the root of all problems now. Hard work is no longer cool. Keeping up with the joneses is the end all be all
And this includes parents. Parents are also keeping up with other parents spoiling their kids because they want to be “seen” as they can do so as well

It’s crazy how many small businesses are running half staff trying to stay in business. The oil change business I take my vehicles to is only open an average of 4 days a week and it’s a crapshoot which days the open sign is displayed.

Everyone with an ounce of work ethic and skill has used the last 2 years to move up into higher paying jobs. Even filming TikTok videos is a better paying gig than manning the drive thru or bussing tables. This leaves traditional entry level service industry work to the absolute dregs.

Think about it, personally I’d rather mow yards for $50 a pop, 30 min each than man the grill at McDonalds for 3-4 hours for the same pay. One takes hustle though.

Easy. Covid hit and we paid the service industry workers to sit at home and live off the government. And they did. And now, after over a year of sitting at home, they didn’t want to go back to work. Because they’d rather sit at home and live off the government. And so long as we continue to subsidize that, they will continue to do so.

Oh believe me, I have a new appreciation for hourly workers and small businesses. I hate to admit it, but the words “at least they’re working” have been said numerous times in occasions wherein service may’ve been less than stellar. I guess it’s supposed to be a compliment.

Basically the entire bottom third of the labor market has given up trying and is content just fricking around in perpetuity. They see no path toward the middle or upper class so don't even bother. The top two thirds are still working as intended.

There used to be an obligation to work well. Even the shite employees at food service jobs felt the need to be professional and try to deliver positive service to customers. This obligation meant some people did better than others, and through that there was a path toward upward mobility. This path takes time to develop.

In the last few years a complete "frick the customer" has overtaken a lot of lower class employees and they never have to bother to try because they know even if they do get fired they could get a random job somewhere else for a few days.

They don't even want to pay money to smart/qualified people. Check out jobs in the tech/IT industry. They want you to have a CVS receipt's list of qualifications but want to low ball the hell out of you at the same time.
