Expand it? Keep it the same?

It’s always a hot topic, but I believe the playoffs needs to be bigger, expand it and give those top 8 team a run!

8 feels right, but you have to end the conference championship games.
You could possibly go with 12, with the top 4 teams receiving byes

Idk why anyone would vote against expanding to 8 teams.

Expand it

I would love to see a 16 team playoff like all other levels of CFB. I could get behind a 12 team playoff with teams getting byes. The main thing I would like about a bigger field would be top seeds get home games...save a neutral site for finals OR final 4 teams

12 teams because it still makes getting into that top 4 mean a lot because of the bye, then the next 4 also is important to get a home game. Last 4 just happy to be there.

It eliminates any chance of starters being rested and maximizes storylines/intrigue

And an NIT playoff for second tier teams (it would be more watchable and have more importance than the lower tier bowls)

Both playoffs either 8 or 16 teams. The top teams dont need an added advantage getting a bye and 16. would expand field to give teams something to play for after a loss or two.

Drop the rent a wins.

It will never happen but imagine if bottom team in each conference had to play a relegation/promotion game versus a non power 5 conference champ. Now that would really make every game count. We've already added non traditional teams to the conferences. Who cares if Vandy gets replaced by App St or UCF for a season or few.

Transfer portal is out of control. This needs to be fixed first. It is way too wide open as it’s essentially caused free agency with no salary cap.

Next, CFB needs reorganization. There are too many bowl subdivision teams and too much inequality among conferences both in size and numbers of conference games. I believe we should reduce the number of conferences to somewhere between 6 and 8 (down from 10), force every team to be in a conference, make conferences play an equal number of games, and make every conference have the same number of teams (between 12 and 16). Games between FBS and FCS should be eliminated. These reforms would help to reduce the gap in “strength of schedule” and reduce “rent-a-wins” that fans have little interest in watching.

Conferences should also be constructed with traditional rivalries and regionalism in mind, and ALL Conference Champs should make the playoff. This ensures all corners of the country have a team to watch for the playoff, which should include 8 teams.

I am perfectly okay with the 2nd place team in a conference NOT making the playoffs despite being better than most of the other conference champs because that team had a chance to win their division and conference on the field. That keeps the regular season’s “playoff atmosphere” intact. Mulligans are what destroyed this more than playoff expansion, imo. I also think the first round of said playoff should be seeded not based on wins and losses but by traditional conference matchups (think BCS Bowl tie-ins).

Finally, OOC schedules should be more or less standardized to ensure more marquee OOC games and conference interaction.

8 teams with some BCS flavor
P5 Conference champs, but have to be ranked in the top 12. Any not ranked in the top 12 are switched to at-large.
Top G5 conference champ/indy if ranked in top 12.
Two at-large, based on highest final poll rankings.

There is a good chance that you end up with 4 or 5 P5/G5 champs each year that make it, and probably 3-4 at-large.

Should never be more than 4. Most (all?) years, the 4th team is incapable of providing even a reasonable contest for the legit playoff teams. Why go to 8? Teams ranked 5 to 8 aren't deserving, and it opens up way too much room for argument over who those teams are anyway.

Nah expanding is a waste because there are only a few who can compete for the NC anyway. 8 teams is just muddying the water when we know who the real contenders are...its just over kill

I have spent more hours than I should thinking about this over the last few years. I think 8 is the right thing to do. Power 5 winners auto qualify. Highest rated Go5 champ. Two at-large. First round on college campuses of top 4 seeds.

What is more than likely to happen is a 12 team playoff, but a 12 team playoff will almost always result in a rematch from earlier in the season. I personally don't care to see rematches, but that's just me. Also, I think it would be overly SEC; HOWEVER, if a 12 team playoff increases LSU's chance of a championship each year I'm for it.

All power five champions get automatic invites. Three wild cards based on whatever formula, ranking, BCS, CFB playoff ranking they want to come up with to give 8.

Problem is by the time January comes around it’s obvious who the best teams are… Usually the top couple are very obvious and it’s not worth watching a bunch of bad football to get there…They don’t have eight “great teams “ever… This isn’t the parity of the NFL

Break off the premier 30-40 teams or so. Have them play only each other in games that count. Make the fluff in state games pre season exhibition games.

Make a 8-12 team playoff

I mean if you want to repeat what is successful in every major sport that is how you do it. Not saying college football hasn't been successful but it seams to be the outlier in format among successful systems.

Expand it. Play the round of 16 on campus, and subsequent rounds can be the "bowls."

Every single person who spits on the idea will be excited once the games are actually played.

I'm against an expanded playoff. Hell I'm against a playoff in general. I always loved college football because of how valuable the regular season was. My preference is the plus 1 model. You have all your bowls as normal after conference championship, sec champ to sugar, pac 12 and big 10 to rose, acc to orange etc, THEN after all those games, you have #1 play #2 after the post bowl poll for the natty

SEC (when we get to 16 teams) needs to add a semifinal weekend before the conference championship. The other conferences can have their own playoffs. Whoever wins that can play the SEC champion for the National Championship.

P5 Conference champs get automatic bids. The three highest ranked teams outside of conference champs get the last three spots. Boom, 8 team playoff with Conference championship games.
